You may be right, I rarely buy things I can't return, what is the point? Even Asda allows you to return food in some of their ranges if you have bought the wrong thing, even after you have eaten them ! I was told that last week when buying something I was not sure about was right and they told me to return it if I found it was not what I wanted - the item cost me £1 !!!!

If I find they are either too expensive or no chance to return if not happy, I might end up buying on eBay but there is no guarantee then when many items for sale are on "No returns accepted" basis, so if I am going to spend £40 or £50 or even more, I don't want to end up with a load of rubbish that I can not only not use but can't sell on either or return ! eBay is full of counterfeit items too as I have found to my cost ! As an OAP living on a reduced state pension, I can't afford to throw away £50 away which is nearly half my weekly income. :(

The one in Lazer's post for £49.99 looks good value for money.

T-Mobile SIM here (T-Mobile/Orange/EE are joined now) £0.99

Details for the 6 month Blackberry package here costing £20.

You can buy a £20 T-Mobile topup for as little as £16....reducing the cost to £2.66 per month for all the data you would need for using WhatsApp and Viber. You can also set the phone up to send and receive email etc. All at no extra cost.

By the way, just looked at that Blackberry and did you notice it has 60 days warranty ? Very good for the price considering it says it is new. I will certainly be considering it too.

Yes, I noticed it. It's an old model, but good enough for your needs.

All of the links in my post offer Returns.

If you were able to follow some simple unlocking instructions, I would recommend this Blackberry Curve 9320 for £32.04 It has a 12 month warranty.

It is actually locked to Orange, which suits your current SIM, but Orange is too expensive for Blackberry Internet Service. So I would recommend unlocking it(it costs £1) and using the T-Mobile package linked to above.

Thanks for all that info, really appreciate it.

I am on just Orange at the moment and wouldn't necessarily want to change my number, would that cause me a problem?

I have been looking too at the Nokia Lumia 520, although a touchscreen which I said I wouldn't buy as I am not used to using one and obviously wanted the physical Qwerty keyboard as I think they are easier and faster for me to use, but I think you can use a Qwerty keyboard on the Lumia 520 too ? It would depend on the size of the screen I guess. I think I should take a look in the phone shops and see which i feel most comfortable with and then make a decision. Good idea ?
  • Try before you buy is always the best choice!

Here's my Lumia 520 with the keyboard on - i've set it sideways to make to make it wider

Notice that it tries to guess the word you are typing, so even if you've not typed in something too carefully, it still tries to fix it for you

Me? Biased.. well, I guess I don't like blackberries much as the only exposure i've had is fixing one with a strange java error. I've never seen any other phone have such a massive error that wasn't fixable without plugging into a PC and refershing.

Otherwise, we've got iphones, Windows phones and android phones at home (plus an old Nokia E72 somewhere). They're just tools to do a job; i'm no fanboy

You can port your Orange number over to the new SIM.

If you intend to use a Windows Phone, you should check the cost of data on Orange. I don't know which tariff you are using.
They sell a 500MB data package for £7.50 per month or perhaps £0.65p per MB which could easily exceed the cost of using the T-Mobile solution.

It's quite a minefield out there. The phone is but one aspect.

Posting that picture is really helpful. Gives me an idea of size too. :T

You're not kidding it's a minefield! I have problems just trying to update myself on the latest TV or satnav etc. Isn't there a nice little web site that lays out all the options you want for a mobile with a tickbox and you could then base your decision on the results and what you get for such and such money ? Now there's a nice little sideline for someone looking to make money on the net :D

I will have to try to remember all the things I need to ask when I go into the shop. They will probably chuck me out after I have bombarded them with all what I want and want to know ;)

I'm sure that the people here have looked through your options within your budget. Hence the Lumia 520, a similar Android phone or a Blackberry.

If you are happy with a Touchscreen Qwerty, the Windows phone fully supports what you need to do. The only issue then will be how much data you could use.
Perhaps ringo can help with this.

So if I bought the T-Mobile Sim on ebay, I would need to change my number? Don't they supply a Sim card with new phones anyway ? So is it better to swap over to T-Mobile for cost saving on the data usage then ? Carphonewarehouse are selling Nokia Lumia 520 on Orange or T-Mobile for £59.95 which seems reasonable, is it cheaper to reserve on line and collect in store?

    Questions, questions .... sorry :(
