Aren't these much more expensive ? I am a complete techno phobe so do not understand the technology behind "Android", what is that?0 -
Yes, they're more expensive generally, and probably harder to use
How about you go to a shop and try out a Nokia Lumia 520? It's a 'Windows' Phone (I just got one for work). They are vastly easier to use than Android, and they're only £69.99 for Pay as you go on O2

Go and try a cheap touch-screen windows phone.. they are ok to use, will support Viber/Whatsapp , work quite well as a camera. It's not my idea choice for a phone (as I'm capable of dealing with more complexity and find them a bit simple)
or.. for a modern physical keyboard, you could try the Nokia Asha 210 (think it's been mentioned) - http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/phone/nokia/nokia-210/ppay?colourCode=BLACK&gift=undefined&giftType=undefined0 -

In actual fact I was going to go for a Nokia Asha 210 until someone mentioned that it is not really a smart phone so thought it might not be suitable for what I want. So many to choose from.......:undecided0 -
The Asha 210 is a 'feature phone' in marketing speak. It supports Wi-Fi and some apps.
'Smart phone' is a marketing term. If it has wifi, supports whatsapp/viber - then it'll do what you need (i.e. cheap communication abroad)0 -

So I presume the Asha 210 doesn't support Viber but then neither does the Nokia E71 does it, so same difference I guess ? I do like the look of both of these and the Nokia E71 certainly has good reviews on the net.0 -
Hi
A little off thread,but has anyone found that texts using what's app can take ages to go.
Following recent experience I have found that some sent that way have taken hours to either go or other messages coming in have been similary delayed.
Last weekend trying to arrange a meeting with friends I had to go back to my old text provider.
I suppose this was bound to happen when more people discover what's app.0 -

The Asha phone is several years newer and is supported by Viber
The E71 is ancient now, I had one 7 years ago. It's is probably too old for the Viber team to support
Go into a phone shop and ask to see some phones. They typically will let you have a go with 'real' ones0 -

Very good advice and I can ask all my questions there. I like the look of the Asha too :T0 -
Watch out for the hard sell, and they'll try to lure you into a contract .. i've found the worst place for it is phones4u - Carphone warehouse are usually very friendly
You best bet is write down a list of what you want and show them.. e.g.
* Physical Keyboard
* Has Wi-fi
* Supports Viber and WhatsApp
* Reasonably priced
* Simple to use
Make sure they know exactly what you want, and try to not let them distract you with other stuff.0
