I would prefer a qwerty keyboard as it is faster. I find other mobile phones very frustrating and laborious to use. I was a typist all my life so am used to a qwerty keyboard, so I would like if possible to get one of those. Blackberry seem to be the only ones that offer this but many are expensive. I only want it for basic stuff like texting as I say so why pay for all the gizmos when I won't use them. Never use music downloads, games, anything really other than texting and the occasional phone call or picture taking (hence the need to swap over my microcard from my existing phone).0

In terms of the speed, a gesture/slide typing keyboard can be much faster for a touchscreen, like Swype or Swiftkey:
AFAIK, many new smartphones come with such keyboard as default.0 -

Actually not keen on "touch" screens but there appear to be a lot of mixed reviews on these downloaded Qwerty keyboards. I like the real thing better. I think I will still try to get a proper Qwerty keyboard as the "extras" don't really bother me and I just want a user friendly "text" workhorse0 -
An old Nokia E71 or E72 would also be ok.. they support wifi, can run Whats app and have a full querty physical keyboard0

If you are on a budget, you can try a second hand Blackberry.
Examples here and here and here within the Asha 210 budget.
You want a Blackberry with either OS5 or OS7. Viber doesn't work with OS 6.
You can couple it with a T-Mobile SIM and a Blackberry 6 month Booster for £20.
SIM costs £0.99 and has £5 of credit. Add £20 and apply the Booster which will give you enough data every month to use Viber/WhatsApp to your heart's content.
With Viber, you can make free calls to other Viber users and well as messages, pics and video.
WhatsApp, free messaging including pics and video.0 -

Thanks for the suggestions, I will take a look. Can I use Viber with these ?0 -
I believe it is not supported.. frankly it's an old clunky phone, and I think you should give touchscreens a try - keyboards such as swype on Android make typing so quick and easy.0
