WhatsApp - Any Cost in Data Allowance?

The reason I am changing my mobile to a one that uses Apps is because my daughterm (who has recently moved to Spain) who i am texting a lot is not yet on Broadband until she moves somewhere move permanent and the signal where she is is pretty poor for skyping, plus she will be out and about a lot in Spain working, so obviously a cheaper way of texting and calling will be great.
Do you realise that whatsapp doesn't send regular texts? Your daughter will need a data package in Spain to get your messages, and she will need a phone that can run whatsapp0 -

Out of interest.. Why don't you just use skype on your laptop?
I'm afraid that some of the other posters may be barking up the wrong tree in how you plan to use your phone
No one is 'barking up the wrong' tree. We are looking at all possibilities, not just one scenario. Some of us are forward looking. New function and possibilities can affect usage.
How many stories have you read on this forum alone, of people who were convinced that they we only using WiFi, but somehow they racked up a huge bill?
Also, will the OP never take the phone outside the home?
The point of a mobile telephone is the ability to take it with you. Useless if you have to wait until you get home to communicate or have to wander around to find a free HotSpot.0 -

She has a Smartphone.0 -

She has her own smartphone on contract there and yes she would need to download the apps, I did realise that.0 -
By the way is Whatsapp and Viber free to use for outside the UK too?
I don't envisage using the apps regularly from outside my house but obviously would if I were at airports or texting my friends in the UK whilst abroad.0 -
As long as you've got the data/wifi available, then you can use it anywhere in the world.
You might find that Whatsapp requires an annual subscription price of 69p.. it's well worth it though0 -

Just been into Carphonewarehouse who told me the cheapest texting option was with "3" and suggested I go to another shop a few yards away to ask them about the package with 3. I went there and they told me their texting charges using the apps and data works out about the same as other networks. So I popped into T-Mobile and guess what, they told me the same ! They said data costs are pretty much the same when it comes to using the Apps. The one at T-Mobile said the texting charge is only really affected by the "package" and what you get. They give you 250Mb and unlimited texts for £10 per month. She also said if you connect to the wifi you get them cheaper but as she said they are almost the same on all the networks for data usage.
Took a look at the Nokia Lumia 250, it looks good but the Qwerty keyboard is a bit on the small side as it only fills half of the screen, I think I would have to use a plastic stick until I got used to the size of the keys (lol). They do a next one up Nokia Lumia 625 (I think it was) which was a slightly larger phone with a slightly larger keyboard for £99.99 (a bit more than I wanted to pay).
Also at Carphonewarehouse, they said you get the "deal" price if you stay on your own network as a loyalty discount on the Nokia Lumia 520. If I wanted to swap to T-Mobile it would be £20 more expensive for the same phone.0 -
Just asked my daughter what her phone is and she said it is an iPhone4S and she has now downloaded Whatsapp. Don't know if she can use Viber on that, will have to check.0
