So basically, in her mind what's hers is hers alone, and what's yours is hers too...nice little set up she has there!

She's behaving like a princess. Take her at her game, and tell her she can go stay with friends. See how they like it when she refuses to pay them anything!

Hold the front door open for her and tell her the time of the next bus.

Apparently all her friends can't believe that I charge her rent. My friends can't believe she pays so little (when she does pay).

Judging from the replies here most people say she's taking the mick, not that she sees it that way.

I don't think she is being very fair to you.

I'd call her bluff, and say that actually her 'offering' to go and live with friends would probably be the best thing, as because you had no income at the moment you would now need to get a lodger to share your home.

Don't mention anything about the relationship. If she cares for you, she will either start to pay what's reasonable, or agree to move out and continue your relationship in that manner. If she throws a hissy fit and dumps you, well then I think you'd be well rid.

Well her friends can keep her then. You can't, and there is no reason you should!

The best thing to do IMO, if you can't afford the mortgage alone atm, would be to take in a lodger. Having her there staying rent-free means you can't do that and are losing out on the money a lodger could give you. So either she pays up or she goes to her friends' and you get a lodger. You don't want to risk losing your house for her sake when she's got hers sitting prettyand getting paid for while taking advantage of living with you rent-free.

wow this girl is shocking , i cant belive she thinks its ok to live rent free ,
why dont u sugest living in her place and renting yours then also drop the bombshell you wont be paying

just say if we turn the table would that be ok?

i live with my patner and im a stay at home mum so i dont physical pay rent but i do all the "home stuff" and we see this as perfect for us as child care is to much for us it would be more than i could earn

Thanks for an alternate view. She has got money from her redundancy package and a small amount of income from her flat. She is also becoming a freelance personal trainer and has the alternative to get a job if she wants to.

Money has been an issue from the very beginning but in my opinion you have to pay towards your accommodation. At £300 pounds a month for a 4 bedroom house in Wimbledon that's not a large amount to pay.

One point I think you missed is that I'm also being made redundant. I've got no choice but to rent or sell my place or lose it. It's not an option for me just to not pay as I don't have an income.

definitely agree we need to sort things out though especially as we are planning to go travelling!

Why aren't you renting out the other rooms?

It's not 'rent' in my eyes, but a contribution towards living costs which is expected.

Is she registered as living at your house properly (electoral roll, bank etc.)?

I would ask her again, for a minimum of a contribution of half of all utility bills and groceries. Mortgage is a grey area for me as it's your house and your mortgage but utilities should most definitely be split. If she says no then suggest she should stay at a friends.

Definitely look into taking in a lodger if you'd rather not have to sell up, or suggest both moving into hers while she pays the mortgage so you can rent your house out...
