What can I do .... Dog differences
Comments

Dogs are like children, people get STUPENDOUSLY touchy if you spot an issue with their child/fur baby that they hadn't noticed. They take it as some massive giant pointy finger above their heads marking them out as inadequate.
In this case, the defensiveness is waaaayy outta the park. If any of my friends were that touchy about a dog's bed, I'd be suspicious they'd been smuggling stuff in it!
My dogs turn and scuffle about about before curling up..... But they also do like a comfy, so I don't think your instincts were wrong.
Is this person normally a good friend?0 -
I agree with the above comments. Some people are very touchy regarding the care (or lack of) that they give their animals. To some people, a bed is a bed is a bed. To others, it needs to be warm and soft and comfy.
I would probably have bought a new bed, but lied outright at the owner's return to say that the old one was thrown up on and beyond saving, or my husband had tripped on it and broken it, or some other white lie. This may have been the best outcome for all concerned, including the dog.
Nowt as funny as folk!0 -
Another here whose dogs have squashy, expensive beds.... and who tend to sprawl out on the floor.. but at least they have the choice!0

At the last count my cats had no less than eleven baskets, beds and blankets in this house. Currently one is asleep in the bath, one on top of the wardrobe and one on a pile of old newspapers.Val.0

Anxiety/change is environment can cause loose bowels, so may not have been caused by a health problem.
Hard to say about the bed, as long as the dog was happy and didn't have a pressure sores etc. then it probably is okay, even if it was quite worn. Nice that the dog has you to look out for it though

You could probably get a cheap dog bet somewhere like home bargains for a few quid.
I think theres a difference being touchy about a pet and being incandescent with rage.
Id be seriously considering a friendship if someone had a go at me over something you were trying to do to help out.0 -

I fully agree, it has changed the way I would consider our relationship to be, I did owner a favour by having the dog for a week (obviously dog food et al provided by owner so no expense to me but saved owner a fortune in kennel should be very happy and grateful no??)
No contact has taken place since dog delivered back home...0 -
My mum had 3 of my cats for 17 nights when I was getting a new kitchen in, plus I had to wait a week for the job to be signed off, just made life easier. My cats wouldnt go in a cattery, they were fine with my mum as they know her, but one of my cats in particular is really funny with strangers, he hid the first time my brother visited my mum, hasnt seen my brother in a few years and only came out the second time when my brother patted him and went over to see him where he was hiding.
Im lucky in that my mum can come down to mine if Im ever away and feed them and Ive done it for her in the past.
But if my mum bought my cats a blanket (and she has done), Id say thank you, I wouldnt say, do you think the old one is a bit tatty.
You did a big favour and next time if she asks you again Id be tempted to say, get a dog sitter. You were doing what you thought was right, if the bed was a bit worn, I see no harm in getting the dog a new one.0 -
Thank you for all the replies, the dog bed was something like this one
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Oval-cushion-soft-faux-Suede/dp/B0081QNL3I/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1395247732&sr=8-4&keywords=dog+bed
all the stuffing/foam/padding had gone from it, owner said it cost £80 but link says £15 in the sale and £5 postage.
It could have cost that, a lot of dog beds look very alike despite huge differences in price:
