I second the post that he wants time with you, not presents to 'make up' for what he has been through. Materialistic stuff isn't the answer, especially when you can ill afford it.

You need your phone. He has more presents than my own daughter gets on her birthday from me and her Dad so he has plenty there.

    Under £2 per ticket.
Cineworld are £1 a ticket …my DD and DH went to see the Moshi Monster Movie the other week for £2! They took sweets and drinks so it was a cheap morning out.
Natalie, have a look online for kid's am or movies for juniors and see what is on local to you on the morning showings. They are every weekend and normally every day in the school holidays. :)

  • Natilee, Can I encourage you to ask your gp for a referal to 'The Freedom Programme' it is a 12 week rolling course for women in or trying to leave or who have left abusive relationships. The lady who originally wrote it worked in prison with men convicted of domestic violence and asked them what advice they would give to their daughters to prevent them taking up with abusive men. You will find no judgement there, only support and understanding and new friends who understand what you have been through.

Jobseekers Allowance can be contribution based or income based. If you haven't paid enough NI contributions you may be able to get income based.
    See info here:

If you are too ill to work you can claim Employment Support Allowance.

Do the benefits checker on the Turn2us website to see what you should be getting.

Depending on how old your child is you can/could get income support. More info here:

Hi. I've just came across your posts and i just wanted to say that you should never feel like you're a bad mam, judging by what you've written you're doing the best you can in a messy situation, you've managed to do him a nice birthday and he enjoyed it. You will get through this and we are all here to support and advise you.

I read about you thinking of applying for payday loans, well my advice to you would be "don't do it". I work for a home collected credit company and we are under pressure to collect repayments in, and when people fall on hard times the company don't really care, they put pressure on their agents to collect, and in turn the agents put pressure on the customer. It's horrible. Personally I'm too soft and would rather take the grief from the company than have a go at the customer lol.

Let us know how you're getting on, I know this is a horrible time for you at the minute but you've been really brave and left your awful ex, your son will be able to see a difference in you even if you can't. Did you get anti depressants from your doctor? They do work. People expect them to kick in instantly and make you feel like you're on top of the world but they just take the edge off your low mood and make you more able to deal with "life". That's how I found them to work for me anyway.

Take care and I'm sure you're doing a great job of looking after your little un, chin up. Xxx

Hi nataliedee. I apologise I've not read the whole thread but just wanted to suggest your local children's centre. Ours can help with emergency money for food and electricity and generally lots of good advice.
    Might be worth a try.
Sounds like you're doing a fab job in this challenging time though. You're son is lucky to have such a strong mum. x

Please dont feel like a bad mum you are certainly doing the best you can for your son you got out of the explosive/abusive relationship, you gave him a birthday and a party and you love him and are doing everything you can. My mum was single for a while after my dad left us and I have so much respect for single mums I really do so you keep your chin up and think what a good life you are building for your son even if you are having to start at rock bottom he wont forget that you love him and do the best for him in the situations you are facing.

I hope the job centre can help you out, maybe a letter from your dr might help? x
