Can you get yourself a basic bank account with another bank and have your money paid into that so that the bank doesn't take your benefits as soon as you get them? Your overdraft then becomes a debt which you can pay off once you're back on your feet.

    Social Security Administration Act 1992
    Miscellaneous
Certain benefit to be inalienable **

187- Subject to the provisions of this Act, every assignment of, or charge on-
    (a)benefit as defined in section 122 of the Contributions and Benefits Act;
    (b)any income-related benefit; or
    (c)child benefit,
and every agreement to assign or charge such benefit shall be void; and, on the bancrupcy of the beneficiary, such benefit shall not pass to any trustee or other person acting on behalf of his creditors.

** inaliable = not to be forfeited.
Basically they can't take you benefit money for overdrafts or debts, and if they have you can ask for it back !

Contact your bank about them taking your benefit money to pay the charges.

Natalie, just a quick message, you're doing just great and getting some fab advice, but don't feel like you're begging. Charities have been set up to give a little assistance to people in your exact situation , you are not begging, just looking for a bit of help right now. Any one of us could need the assistance of a charity tomorrow and that is why they exist.
Use them to help you out, and in the future when you don't need them then you can give a little back, take some bags of food to the food bank, donate a few pounds to a different charity or whatever, but right now you are the very reason they exist.
Keep going and keep keeping us up to date.
    Willowpop xx

  • HI nataliedee.

I just wanted to say you are coping so well after everything you have been through, I hope you manage to get somewhere with the JSA.

Your son sounds very sweet and I'm sure he loves you very much and is just glad to see his mum happier.

I sincerely hope everything works out for you, take care.

Have you spoken to the bank yet about refunding your benefit money that was taken in charges?

If you can get that back, you'll have some money for food.
