We are passionate about lifting people out of debt and poverty through our award winning debt help service and money management course, the CAP Money Course. We started in 1996 when John Kirkby gave up his successful career in consumer finance to help people out of misery and poverty associated with unmanageable debt. We have grown into a national charity with a vision to have a CAP Debt centre, opened in partnership with a local church, in every town and city across the UK.
Reading what's happened this morning drove another tip out of my mind, if Formby isn't too far:

Don't be shy of going in - haggling works in Waitrose at end of day - you have a free drink every day from the moment you take a My Waitrose card application. Fill it in online or send it off...after that little pause+drink, a real breathing spot.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

I used to work in the debt recovery department of a large institution. From experience I can say:
Go to http://www.stepchange.org/ to work out a debt repayment plan and to get help organising and managing your finances in the future. Commercial debt organisations charge loads and take their payment before debts are contributed to so if you go to one then the people you owe to will have less sympathy with you and there will be less leeway in the future, plus your debts will take a lot longer to clear.
Stepchange used to be the CCCS which had the best reputation of any organisation, (including CAB because these don't have national standards but vary hugely according to who the local branch has volunteering for them). It was the most trusted by organisations to whom £s owed, and who would have their suggestions for reduced payments etc accepted almost without question because they were known for honesty and also because they imposed plans, order etc on debtors and helped them stop getting deeper in debt.
Don't make promises you can't keep. If you promise an amount per month then pay it - you'll get less sympathy if you break a financial arrangement then you did when you (apparently, or at least as far they know) initially defaulted.
For this reason v important not to agree to any payments until you have done an income and expenditure form with a reputable company, eg Stepchange, and worked out a long term plan.0 -

Natalie, keep on going. You haven't given up yet and I strongly suspect you're not the type to give up.
Familiy? Who'd have 'em? last year when I had a total breakdown people I'd thought of as both friends and family for 20 years wrote me off and haven't spoken to me since. I was surprised though with the support I got from others that I hardly knew, especially one very lovely lady who I only knew well enough to smile at on the way in and out of school but gave me amazing support and is now a good friend. For me the key was to admit I couldn't cope any more (not easy, wasn't brought up to admit things like that, everything had to look perfect). You mustn't feel ashamned or embarassed to ask for help, if I'd have done it years ago I might not be in the mess I'm in now.
He won't realise it yet but you're giving your son a very positive example of how to deal with whatever life throws at you. When he's older he'll look back and think how amazing you are.
As for the cinema, have a movie night in (it's better because you can wear PJ's!). Borrow a DVD from a friend, get some cheap popcorn and pop (we generally go sm@rtprice, £1 for the popcorn, 17p for 2 litres of cola) snuggle under a duvet (you can turn the heating off because you'll be keeping each other warm) and enjoy.
Don't know where about in Merseyside you are but we've had lots of days out at the museums (free and more fun than you'd expect), the docks, and travelling a bit further to West Kirby and New Brighton (take a few butties and play on the beach, doesn't matter if it's cold as long as it's not raining).
Hope the counseling goes well. I struggled with mine at first because it was difficult but I'm glad I stuck with it. Thinking of you x0 -

Hi Natalie
Sorry to jump in half way through.Hope you are managing to take each day as it comes. Some good advice on this thread. Just wanted to say the Odeon at Liverpool one do cheap films in the holidays too and sometimes on a Saturday. Check their website. Not sure where in Merseyside you are, so you might be able to get a zone ticket to use for you and your son, although I know this all adds up; even if you only get a cheap bottle of juice each and a bag of weeks to share. I used todo tthis often with my two when Iwas lliving there.GC Jan £101.91/£150 Feb £70.96/150 Mar £100.43/150 Apr £108.45 app/150 May £149.70/150 Jun £155.15/150 Jul £134.25/£150 Aug £119.37/£150 £89.67/£150‼️Sep £/£160 Oct (includes food, toiletries and cleaning from 13th to 12th of each month. Dear nataliedee,
Glad to see you're with us again today.
You do realise that if you go to CAPUK, they take all the worry off your shoulders.
All debtors, Banks, utility companies, bailiffs have to deal with them. Any further bad mail you receive, you just put in an envelope for them- AWAY IT GOES. IT'S GONE!
CAPUK's reputation is high: no-one messes with them.
They will give you your own weekly money entirely for you - no more juggling, no more disturbed sleep or anxiety, which is never going to be fully masked from your son, if he's as alert and savvy as you are, to have survived thus far.
Children always pick up on more than we think.
If I hadn't known of people whose lives have been transformed by CAPUK, I wouldn't be writing this now. Mumoftwins has many Threads on here from a few years ago. A number of us supported her in real life too, met, became true friends.
Have you tried any of the links in #138? Lots of freebies in those. Old bread and local ducks are a never-fail combi at any age.
Buying time and lurching from one crisis moment to another is not the answer. It's all still very new. I'll keep saying that, but you can take good steps right now, before therapy. Dare to dial that number:D.....will you try?:A
###
Just want to clarify I'm not posting about CAPUK in competition with any other debt charity. This is the one I still take people too, after seeing them at work for mumoftwins and now MANY others, all these years later. I see the proof of their work every day with other things I'm involved in, mentoring, lives post-release etc.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

Do you have a library within walking distance?
Apart from the obvious books most have computers (often free access) and run sessions for children that are free as well.
Also a good place to find out about things like events being run locally, whether its a free nature walk in the woods or a ramble on the park.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
