The amount of keep you are requesting sounds fair to me. In this country, among the working classes, at least there is a fine tradition of all members of the family contributing to the family to the best of their ability until they move out of parental home and satrt up one of their own. I am pretty certain my sister and I always paid "keep" when working including the summer holidays from university when we were working (though this was in the days of grants so we didn't have to work just to pay off the overdraft). My children are young yet but have just been discussing with my husband that when they are adults if they wish to live with us they will have to contribute both financially and practically. Surely it is part of our job as parents to raise children who understand how to look after themselves in all ways including financial. If we have sufficient income I can well imagine putting aside any contribution they make to give them as a lump sum gift when they buy a house or get married. My parents didn't do this but have over the years given me and my sister a number of gifts such as furniture or DIY services for our house when we bought one etc.

Its entirely up to parents whether they take money or not.

In this instance, its the fact that this young man earns a lot of cash and also thinks its ok for his parents still to pay for some of his stuff, but grudges paying an extra 50 quid a month in rent.

I dont think his age is as relevant as the fact he earns a lot of money and doesn't want to make a reasonable contribution compared to what he earns

Having had a quick look at your 'debt' posts, I'm stunned that you feel able to advise ANYONE about financial matters.

Your parent's approach seems to have worked a treat in helping you to manage money! Some favour they've done you, and you recommend that approach to other people!!!

Out of interest, how will you be so financially stable when you have kids to support, if you can't manage when you're only supporting yourself?

But how are they making a proif? They're asking for a contribution towards costs.

What if someone's adult son or daughter was eating 50 quid a week worth of food and was contributing nothing, how is that profiting, for some people its a token contribution, covering costs, certainly not profit. Food, gas, electricity, toiletries, some people might lose a council tax discount due to an adult son or daughter living with them, petrol money if they drive someone around

Some parents will profit, some won't. Dont you think if someone is earning 30k a year and their parents were struggling, that paying rent is the decent thing to do?

Too simplistic unless you know the outgoings to say everyone will be making a profit if their kids pay some rent.

Oh don't worry, I'm not. You're far too entertaining to engender anything but amusement where I'm concerned. Bless. :D:D

I reckon mine eat/cost far more than £50 a week each, between electronic toys, all the washing they do and eating like horses, my bills are massively lower when they're away from home.

OH and I could also move into a gorgeous 1 bed apartment costing far less than this house costs, if we didn't have the expensive hobby of adult kids. Love em to bits but boy are they expensive!!
