Shops closing early and locking the doors!

If they turn up dead on closing then they should be turned away.
IMO no one should be turned away before the stated closing time. If the staff need time after the stated closing time then the employers need to recognise this and pay them appropriately. And that is what I think the issue is, staff not being paid past closing, so they turn away paying customers before the actual closing time.
My point being is that it is wrong, for example, to state closing is 5pm when really it is 4:45pm to allow staff to close down and tidy up. Customers will always arrive 5 mins before closing, it's life. If the staff need more time to do their jobs then the closing time needs to be amended to reflect this.0 -

But then what about Sunday trading laws? You have to stop. If a stores empty then you may well be able to let people in towards the last minute. If it's busy which will result in queues even with all tills open the people will need to be stopped going in earlier.0 -

The same applies, if customers are in the store after 4pm then they won't get through the tills.
If people turn up at 3:59pm then they should be made aware that if they aren't at the tills paying for their goods in 30 seconds they won't get served.
If people need to be stopped going in earlier then the closing time needs to be amended to reflect this. No point having a 4pm closing time then closing at 3:45pm and hoping customers will just assume you're shutting early.
Scotland don't even have trading hours restrictions.0 -

What about when it's quiet then and you don't need to stop people going on early? I don't live in Scotland!0 -
Then the world implodes.0

I fail to see why you are getting so wound up, I have not said anything about being in a shop after it had shut. my comments are in relation to going into a shop before it closes.
Yes, they could find another job, or they could reenter education and gain some qualifications and then find a better job.
Well someone had the guts to say it. If you don't like working in a shop, do something about it.0 -

Come back tomorrow or go elsewhere. What do you honestly want their Head Office to do for you because you couldn't be arsed to get to the shop in a reasonable amount of time to buy a package of 50p washers.
It really !!!!es me off when people go into shops before closing when they know its just about to close. Generally customers that do that end up hanging around longer than anyone actually wants you there because your card isn't working, forgot your wallet, till crashed, barcode isn't working or because you are just generally annoying.
Its closing time, nobody wants to speak with you, they want to go home because they are not being paid when the clock strikes.
Accept they closed and don't shop there again - why you even emailed their head office I don't know.
I nominate Tom as most valuable employee of the month. Clock strikes hes out the door.0 -
I don't get the issue here. Would you be happy to be held up by someone coming in 5 minutes before closing time? I wouldn't be. Most workers have already been working for several hours and may need to get home for the children, etc.
Don't we all? Annoys me when retail workers moan they're on minimum wage and then clock strikes they're out of the door.
In my job, I don't get to do that regardless of the text bolded. But then I get more than minimum wage.0 -

That's the law? :O
I don't think we have such nonsense in Scotland. Sounds like a fairly old law, eh? We do have the alcohol laws though, so you can't purchase it after 10pm in a shop.
M&S seem to be sensible and give warnings. I think people shouldn't be allowed to join the queue if it's 5 mins to closing and they won't get through before the closing time. People just drive me insane who start their 20 min shop when it's almost closing time because it'll take others that long to get through the tills.0 -

Why wouldn't they leave if they aren't being paid?
It's the ones who are paid over the odds, who are happy to leave at 5pm on the dot and leave others to do the work that we should be annoyed at. If the minimum wage workers have to stay back past finishing time, then managers should have to too. I've often seen an ordinary assistant having to do the lock up because the managers had more important things to get to in their personal lives.
Edit: not saying that you do this personally. I have to stay back unpaid too but am not min wage.0
