Shops closing early and locking the doors!

Really annoys me. Happened at the weekend at Plumbase.

20 mins before closing time door was locked. People sitting inside. Shouted out 'hes gone home we're closed'.

Plenty of people out there who want jobs and don't want to skive off early. I can't do it in my job.

Report them to their head office?

If they're half way decent they'll know as the alarm system will be tied in with head office so they'll be able to see when the alarm was activated.
Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.
  • Emailed both local store and head office. Got reply from local store.

Story is they were having some work done so had to close at 1155. As if you're going to bother to close 5 mins early when the store is closing anyway.

I have pointed out that I was there at 1145 and wasn't told this only told 'hes gone home - we're closed'.

Got a feeling the staff were paid to stay on after closing to allow this work to be done but instead chose to lock the door and start early so they could get out normal time. Wonder what head office will make of that....

If it was an outside contractor or even an internal one with no alarm code access- Odds are the staff had to stay on til he'd finished anyway.

All this spite and malice towards people over something so small......Heaven help you if something that is actually important happens to you in like.

  • In the defence of the employees often unscrupulous employers will not pay past the store closing time, no matter how long the employee has to wait behind to finish serving customers.

In which case I blame head office policy rather than the employee, in shops they are on close to minimum wage, if it was me, I wouldn't work past my hours if they wern't paying either.
  • When I worked in retail many moons ago our shop closed at 1800hrs. From 1750hrs we would close the doors and have a member of staff standing there to let customers out. That way the shop was always virtually empty come 1800hrs.

As Michael points out above - we were only paid until 1800hrs - Which included dealing with the customers still in the shop, tidying the shop and hoovering the floor ready for the next morning. You would be lucky if you was out the shop by 1820hrs.

To be fair, if OP had had to spend time travelling to the store etc. And getting there 15 minutes before they were due to close, I can understand why he'd be annoyed. My husband often has to go to the nearest wholesalers for work, which is a 40-45 minute drive from home. If he had to drive there twice because they closed early, he'd be pretty miffed as that'd be an extra hour and a half that he could have been working.
After all, this is a praise, VENTS and warnings board...

This is true. And deffo out of order to only pay until store closing time.
