Shops closing early and locking the doors!

  • Even if you do call Head Office, what do you really think they are going to do? They might call the store and ask why, but if they get a valid reason they won't pursue it anymore.

I also work in retail, and we advise customers to make their way to the till point 5 minutes before closing. As most other posts have said, if the closing time is 6pm then we expect to stop serving at 6pm (or just after if there is someone at the till).

Firstly you think i'm being abusive and know you think 'a little wound up'.....how on earth do you come to these conclusions!

Seriously why would i be wound up? It's not my thread that has gone down the pan due to lack of flag waving supporters for an over reaction to a shop daring to close early.....

Please quote me where I said I think you're being abusive?

If shops need to close at 4:45pm to allow staff paid until 5pm to cash up and close down tills then that should be reflected in the closing time displayed. It's unreasonable to expect customers to assume the shop will be shut 1hr/30mins/15mins before the stated closing time displayed on the door.

Like I said, the issue here is employers not wanting to pay their staff properly.
  • I work in a small shop open til 5pm mon-sat, and on 4.50 on a Saturday night when we're all ready to go home, the same tw*t comes in and doesn't go until at least 20 past. I swear my heart sinks when he comes in. So I agree the closing time should be the target for people to finish shopping not start it. I've been there all day, I want to go home!

You're missing the point, closed does not mean last in it means stopped trading. The law eg Sunday Trading also see's the word closed to mean stopped trading.

I agree when I worked in retail, sometimes I would do a 10-12 hour shift, then you would get someone coming in last minute. We were told we couldn't tell them to leave. It's very inconsiderate, the opening hours are clearly displayed. I would never do that!
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Shops should decide whether they want the business or not.

I think the way supermarkets do it is about right, where their closing time is the last entrance, and they give 15-20 minutes grace.

But they do need to pay their staff for the hours worked.

    I'm not missing any point.
  • I don't see what's wrong with letting people in at 5 to as long as they're aware that if they head for the tills after closing they won't be served.
I don't see why shops can't ask people to leave. As long as it's not rude, I certainly wouldn't mind!

My mother is notorious for entering the food hall at M&S and picking up a basket at the exact second they say "this store is now closed". Does my head in! They give people 10 and 5 minute warnings, which the customers should heed.
