Shops closing early and locking the doors!

When I worked in retail I had one manager who at near closing time would tell the customers that if they wanted to purchase anything they needed to do it by a certain time(usually 5 mins after closing) or the tills would automatically begin shutting down, then 5 mins after the tills would close down that the lights were programmed to turn themselves off. All in the name of saving the environment.0

If a shop shows a 5pm closing time and I turn up at 4:45pm then I expect to be let in. If the staff need time to close down tills and lock doors then they need to reflect that in their opening/closing times. It's unreasonable and, quite frankly, ridiculous, to expect customers to assume the closing time is actually 10 minutes before the stated time.
Agreed.
Its also unreasonable to pay staff to closing time & not over to allow a realistic time to shut up shop.0 -
;64804256]Please stick to the facts of this thread and not your personal opinion of me. Its not relevant.
You never do you seem to be the king of assumptions. You assume people are skiving, you assume they're lazy, you assume the people in there were staff not contractors, in another thread you decided the whole of the NHS was useless, assume, assume, assume!0 -
What and thats abusive??? No thats my opinion...and as you youself have pointed out i only suggested. Hold my hands up to calling him a petty tale teller because thats what he is in my opinion...No abuse, just giving my take on the situation as the OP should expect others views if puts his tale of woe onto a public forum that actually allows other people to express their views.
EDIT: Actually after thinking about it...i wrote 'Most normal, rational people did'nt go running to head office'....so really i wasn't in no way shape or form saying he wasn't normal or rational or even 'suggesting' he wasn't, as you could also read it as ...some normal and rational people would go running to head office, but this normal, rational person has!
You seem a little wound up.
I merely answered your question with an observation I made from your previous post.0 -
With the company that I work for, we usually open or close the store with the minimum of staff, that will be one staff, one manager.
If there is a problem, say the member of staff takes ill, then there is no alternative but to close the store (at least until another person can get there), and the manager staying behind has to be out of the store with the store locked up. We are not allowed to trade with just one person in store.
A few weeks ago I was rostered for a delivery, with another member of staff, the other member was late, as the delivery driver was with me, I could enter the store and allow the delivery to go ahead, but I was not allowed to open the shop, them's the rules.
Also, if we lose power or water, again the store has to close.
It could just be that there was emergency work going on, that due to H&S meant that they could not allow customers into the building.0 -

I worked in a supermarket and SO many people would come in at 10 to closing, grab a trolley and proceed to do their weekly shop. We had to stop letting people in at 10 to (or were asked, what do you need and a decision was made)
I was often in charge of rounding up people at 5 past closing, and people were in absolutely no rush, meandering around, looking at dates.
Yes a shop should shut at the time it says, that means customers need to be OUT at the time it shuts. Until customers respect that, then shops will need to do the above. Not 'locking up' early, but controlling who enters very close to closing time.
Oh gods yes!
I'm lucky in that in my shop we're paid until 10 mins after we shut, but even then, people are trying to come in at five to, and expect to have a tv wrapped and ready to go before we shut.
I once spied a guy meandering about 5 mins after closing. I told him that we were shut, and his reply was "Oh, it's okay, I'm not buying anything."
He got cross when I asked him to leave.
I think it's more than fair to restrict who can enter a shop before closing time, because people do take the !!!!, and will take as long as they like if they step foot in the door one minute before closing, or ten hours before closing. Shops are open all day, and by the end, staff understandably are tired and want to go home.
Hell, I will only go into a shop within its final hour of trading if it's an emergency and I know I can get straight in and out without causing any inconvenience, and even then, I apologise to the staff for being "that guy." It's the equivalent of somebody being nearly finished in the office for the evening, and somebody turning up and demanding that this whole new pile of work has to be done before you can go home. It's a !!!!!! move, and if you have to do it, at least be understanding.0 -

Firstly you think i'm being abusive and know you think 'a little wound up'.....how on earth do you come to these conclusions!
Seriously why would i be wound up? It's not my thread that has gone down the pan due to lack of flag waving supporters for an over reaction to a shop daring to close early.....0 -

Best post of the thread!
I'm exactly the same! I wont goto a shop if its withing 30-45 minutes of closing time. These shop workers have lives and families as well.
In this day of major shops either open 24 hours or from 8am till 8pm, I honestly cant see why people need to leave it till the last minute to get their shopping.0
