I do understand completely. But then I've never said I would be in a shop after closing.

If I turn up at the shop 5 mins before closing and I know it'll take me two to buy a loaf of bread, pay, and be out of the shop, I expect to be let in. Otherwise what is the point of advertising closing hours if the shop actually shuts earlier to allow the staff to close down till etc?

Either read what I'm writing or go argue with someone else.

But the shop assistant doesn't know it'll take you two minutes. So rightly, they may refuse to let you in.

That is their prerogative, I've never said it wasn't.

Like I've said previously, I wouldn't leave it so late. But refusing entry at 3:30pm for a 4pm close undermines any closing times they have printed on the door.

If a shop need to close at 3:30pm so staff can get cleared up then that is what should be printed on the door. Not "OPEN 8am - CLOSE 4pm (but we might close at 3:30pm, it depends how busy we are)."

The shop should be paying their staff beyond closing time if they expect them to do work - cash up, do tidying, re-stock items, lock doors and secure the keys, etc.

Demanding that people work whilst not paying them is a dirty trick.

You might want to read Vyle's post. What you have written there just shows pure ignorance about some peoples situations. It doesn't take guts to write things like you say, just lack of intelligence. I'll copy & paste it below.

I'm going to assume that this insultingly ignorant reply is born of simple ignorance, rather than trolling. I can't speak for others but I wouldn't be in retail if I didn't have life situations that dictated it including, but not limited to:

Health -- I have a degenerative disease that means that I cannot work in an office. I've given up two promising careers (for which I have degrees) because being stationary is so bad for me that at 19 I was walking with a walking stick and my right arm barely functioned.

Sadly, retail is one of the few jobs that affords the correct sort of mobility that keeps my body at just about the right level of health.

family -- My condition is hereditary. I spend a lot of my time caring for older family members with the same condition which has deteriorated. Unfortunately, retail is the only thing I've come across that also affords the flexibility to tend to their needs and adjust my hours to help with hospital appointments.

So while I would love to go into my dream careers, it's not feasible. Just because retail is a low level job does not mean that the staff lack qualifications, ambition, competency or the right to basic courtesy.

The thing that I can't understand with supermarkets when they are due to close and want everyone out - is why do the close all tills except 1 and end up with a very long queue of customers waiting to be served. This is particularly frustrating when you only have 2 or 3 items and have to queue behind several who have got over-brimming trolleys!!

perhaps so next time folk wont leave it till the last minute, have you been there at closing since, or do you intend too? if you go again at closing and the same thing happens , please let us know. I love a good laugh.:rotfl:
;64837837]Don't we all? Annoys me when retail workers moan they're on minimum wage and then clock strikes they're out of the door.

In my job, I don't get to do that regardless of the text bolded. But then I get more than minimum wage.
Why should that annoy you?

As you say in your 2nd paragraph, you earn more than NMW so you can hardly compare yourself to others who don't.

You probably run a car too.
Maybe some of those people you seem to denigrate have a bus to catch home and that's why they need to be out of the door quickly.

Unfortunately with unemployment at the level it is it's an employers market, and some employers will take advantage of that.

If you're not prepared to work extra hours for nothing they will simply sack you and get somebody else who is.

I'm glad I'm nearing the end of my working life rather than just starting out on it.

Imagine if surgeons did this. You wake up with a gaping hole and your intestines showing, and the nurse explaining it went on past five pm. so 'e's gone 'ome.
