I used to work on a counter making pizzas to order. We always used to shut the counter at 7.30 to clean down as we all finished at 8. We would always get one customer that came at 7.55 demanding we make them a pizza and then off they went to get a manager who would always make us do it! So 10 mins to heat the wrapper up plus cleaning down again afterwards and the other 10 customers that see us do it and want theirs making too and it's easily 8.30pm plus when we got out of there!

Just ask yourself one question, if the shoe was on the other foot and you had to stay half an hour- 1 hour past your finishing time on a sat evening or you have plans right after work? Would you be happy about it? Thought not!
There are times when we have to stay behind for in avoidable reasons but it takes the biscuit when it's because someone has left it until 5 minutes before the store shuts to do there shopping!

But then thats the stores fault. If they dont want to to sell pizzas past 7-30 there should be a sign saying it. Otherwise, I think its perfectly fair for someone to expect it if the stores still open.

However, the fact that you might have to stay 30 mins later and work for nothing is indeed scandalous. Stores need to pay for staff for 30 mins after closing if they want it like this.
  • I regularly work half an hour/an hour unpaid overtime. It's better than the alternative.

Fair enough Gordon but it is a bit much to expect staff to consistently work for free. If we all did it for nothing because we were scared of losing our jobs it'd just clear the way for employers to take the !!!!.

I remember closing up our store once at 6:30pm, when a lady and her two teenage kids tried to get in as I was locking the doors. She waved her watch in my face saying "it's only 6:23" followed by threats of reporting me to head office.

I calmly pointed to the large clock inside the store and politely told her that we open & close by the time on the store clock, not hers.

The customer is NOT always right!

What alternative? I won't work unpaid and have never spent a day unemployed since first starting work. If you want to work for free more fool you.

So do I, but then I work from home so it's not much of a commute.

I don't do it all the time, and my employer certainly doesn't expect me to do it. The way I look at it is that if it'll take an extra half hour to get a job completed I'd rather do that than let it carry over into the next working day.
  • I feel like one of the lucky few reading this... we are paid for 30 minutes past closing. But that time is to get the tills off and finish tidying for the next day, not serving customers.
