I know what you mean about clothing limbo I am feeling the same I really think I need a change of style. I like to wear jeans and a sweatshirt/hoody its what I feel comfortable in and its me, most of my tops are 'labels' that have the name splattered over the front :o for example Abercrombie & Finch, Henleys, Animal, etc you get the idea not things a forty year old should be wearing :(

I used to wear trainers to complete the look  but have now starting wearing boots instead (its killing my poor feet :rotfl:)

I think I need to start looking for some smart sweatshirts/jumpers from maybe next or somewhere like that, something plain with no name over the front.

I do like the capsule wardrobe that lush posted I would wear most of that but I don't do dresses or skirts.

Those types of tops and hoodies 'date' very quickly and can become a false economy.

Try Next, Marks and Spencers or Mint Velvet for key pieces in neutral colours and nice fabrics that will last you longer.

There's nothing wrong with wearing 'trainers' as such, but maybe look at some plain leather plimsol type trainers that will look sporty but smart with skinny jeans/leggings and a tunic?

This would be a gorgeous outfit if you like comfort and casual:

Red plimsolls, navy chinos, white t-shirt and stripy cardigan - lovely and very chic!

When we were 35 a friend and I decided that 40 was the age to stop wearing a hoody. (I still have 2!)

I would guess I have 3 or 4 :o but I have moved more towards sweatshirts than hoodies. I am lucky I don't look my age, people put me at around 36-37 so does that mean its still allowed? :rotfl:

I am working on a capsule wardrobe, something like this, anyone have any other ideas?

There is a lovely girl on YouTube called LightbyCoco who is doing Project 333 (where you only wear 33 items of clothing for 3 months). She is posting up videos of all her outfit combinations. I am finding it really inspiring.

tried this thanks, I would not be seen in anything it recommended I am 40 not 80! :rotfl:

I think I do wear clothes/labels that are maybe a bit young for me I am starting to get a bit paranoid about it :(

You can wear young clothes in a more age appropriate way though. Oddly enough, I get a lot of fashion inspiration from Muslim friends. They love shops like Top Shop, but obviously can't wear the clothes as is. So, they layer those clothes up with loose trousers underneath and jackets on top and make a dress that is too short/revealing look really classy.
  • 33 pieces of clothing for 3 months? I think I probably wear less than a dozen :D

I live in black pants and my cheer hoody.

What sort of excercises do you do?

I am really glad you are enjoying reading :)

I think the key for me is doing any little weight exercises while standing, as it pulls my ribcage up and shoulders back... and then they stay there!

At the doc's I'd somehow lost a whole inch in height - but back to normal height now :j

    Are you glam yet? ;)

Hi there, I'm a big pilates fan, can I suggest that it might be worth finding out if there is a class in your area, DVD's can be good but they can't tell you if you are doing any of the postures wrong.

    Good luck

I had a look at this and I love her style. I have been looking in my wardrobe and realise that i don't actually like many of my clothes at all. The ones I do are either shabby or don't fit. Also my wardrobe is fit to burst. So when I have time and can summon up the energy I am going to have a real purge.

I am loving all the links and ideas everyone is posting. I have...

Done some exercises and now ache all over.

    Taken vits

    Looked after skin

Booked dentist appointment for scale and polish

Done some more ironing, I seriously have got a mountain :(

Feeling happier about my hair, it's looking healthier with more volume.

I have seen a bag in H&M which i love and looks very stylish

Thanks everyone for your input, I love the ideas :T:T:T
