How to become glamorous?

I am a 47 year old single female and feeling my age lately.
I look at some women on the street and some just seem to exude style and glamour even if they are older than me.

What is it that makes a woman glamorous ?

Is it just being well groomed and nice clothes?

I am on a small mission and am going to look after my skin better, buy some good treatments for my hair to get the gloss back and seriously edit my wardrobe.

Other ideas are to get eyelash extensions, wear heels whenever appropriate and have professional manicures.

Any other ideas ladies?
I'd appreciate ideas from men too, what do you find alluring? :)

Come and join us on the ranging thread for loads of advice and support.

In my opinion glamour is less about clothes and makeup and more about confidence.

Hi Lushplus 4, you don't need to spend a lot of money at all to be glamorous. Being well groomed is the first thing I concentrate on. I don't spend lots of money on beauty treatments and keep my rountine simple. Do your own manicures and pedicures for a start. I haven't got eyelash extensions as I cant afford to. I just wear a good mascara. Which again you can find cheaply along with makeup.
As for clothes, go for classic clothes. Ie skinny jeans (depending on your size) nice white blouse and boots and ive got a vintage leather jacket. None of these things cost much either. Oh I also have a cheap hair cut once every 6 weeks (£5 for a cut) my hairs below shoulder length and cut straight across and I have a fringe. I colour my own hair.
The main thing I do concentrate on though is keeping fit and exercising. Again cheaply, go for walks, and I swim too. No gym membership as I cant afford to. I eat well and I keep my figure trim at a size 8, which ive been most of my life. I also eat well and healthily too. Which I think is the first start to looking glamorous from within too.
Just because were all hitting the forties (me at the rear end of 40 now) doesn't mean you shouldn't look after yourself. And for me that comes first......

I wholeheartedly agree with you there, I have lost alot of my confidence and it shows.

My posture is bad and I want to improve that too

Thanks for your reply, luckily my figure is good (size 10) but probably could do with toning up. And the grey hair is a never ending battle but I dye that myself. :)
  • Be careful what you wish for?

    Merriam-Webster Full Definition of GLAMOUR
1: a magic spell <the girls appeared to be under a glamour — Llewelyn Powys>
2: an exciting and often illusory and romantic attractiveness <the glamour of Hollywood>; especially : alluring or fascinating attraction —often used attributively <glamour stock> <glamour girls> <whooping cranes and … other glamour birds — R. T. Peterson>

So, either magic, or an illusory charm.
May I suggest working on liking & respecting yourself a bit more & stressing how well or not you are groomed (another tricky word) a bit less?

That said, if you would love yourself, it helps to maintain the skin you're in! (Life is neither fair nor easy, but applied intelligence makes it less gruesome.)
  • "So, either magic, or an illusory charm"

I think being gracious and charming helps, good point !

I am working on the bit of liking and respecting myself. Thank you for your reply.

I did wonder what you meant :D
Thanks, I will have a look.
  • My OH says he finds me attractive because I make him laugh, never try to be someone I'm not, and am intelligent.

In fact, whenever I wear lots of makeup on a night out, when I remove it he will often tell me I look like me again :)

My tips would be always remove makeup, don't wear loads of makeup in the first place, look after your skin and look after your hair!

  • My make up is okay I think but I think I will book an appointment with one of the Clinnique girls for a consultation. I might pick up a few tips. :)
