Our midwives at NHS ante natal said that as they do automatic skin to skin as soon as baby is born, they had just as well delay clamping the cord. They talked about the benefits of allowing all the placenta blood to pass to baby... I can't remember what they were exactly, but the way she spoke it sounded like there weren't any downfalls/risks, so they would do it unless you requested otherwise.First date 10.2.2002

I did buy a bouncer in the Asda toy event on sale -but could really do with a pram. Reluctant to spend too much as I know from experience that I wont use a travel system after a few months and go out and buy another pram! I had a maclaren with DD2 and it was fab so I am veering towards getting one of those that's suitable from birth.
Don't blame you making full use of your sick note - Im off for a few days now as its half term
I keep looking at prams and am getting nowhere... I'm thinking I want to use it on paths and in parks as well as shopping centres, it has to fit in my Toyota Yaris, I kind of do want it to look pretty too! Yet OH is totally focussed on keeping the price of it as low as possible. Now I'm mainly looking at all these travel systems, but then people keep telling me they are a waste for the time you use them for and I could get something buggy/stroller like for half the price that's just as appropriate. And now you've effectively said the same? It's a minefield! I know I have a while as am only 24+3 but even so it needs sorting!! What are people buying? x0 -
I'm going to ask for delayed cord clamping because I've heard the same - that it means baby gets more nutrients from the placenta right after birth, and also it is supposed to make the experience less traumatic for baby (i.e. You've just been squeezed out of a very small hole, would you want your main goodness supply cut off pretty much at the same time?)
I'm not sure I believe it one way or another, but my other reasoning is that it will be nice for me to actually see and be able to take a picture of OH cutting the cord, rather than him doing so just after I've given birth when I will no doubt be in no mood to concentrate on enjoying the moment of OH cutting the cord.
I also want skin to skin straight away, and will be putting into my birth plan that I want skin to skin to be done with dad if not possible with me for any reason.
Aw Lushlifesaver I know how you feel except you're much sooner than me!! When are you starting your maternity surely it must be soon? Our first baby due 25th May 2014 :T

Can someone please explain to me why delayed cord clamping might be preferable?
I've read a few things, but still don't understand what is best and why, and why I might want to ask the hospital for this??? What is everyone else doing?
Are you doing nct as we got a leaflet thing on it there I'll see if I can find it.sunshine81 wrote: »I keep looking at prams and am getting nowhere... I have a yaris too, wanted something lightweight that a car seat can transfer to (we got a maxi cosi), and look prettybut not crazy expensive. We went for the baby style oyster. It has a carry cot for the first 6 months then the buggy for after that. It's also easy to collapse you can also open it with one hand.

We decided on the uppababy vista, with a maxicosi car seat. We haven't ordered it yet. Probably going to do so within the next couple of weeks. OHs parents are paying which is great but it means we have to wait on them to order it which is slightly annoying. I must ask them when they are intending on doing so.
Though I now read other people raving about the oyster (which was always our second choice) I'm having second thoughts!! My reasoning with the vista was that the storage underneath the pram is much bigger, but maybe I need to go back to kiddicare and have another look just to reassure myself. Our first baby due 25th May 2014 :T

We've got a vista (no baby in it yet though! Grrrr!) and I love it!!! It was the only one hubby and I could agree on because it is really well made and has really useful features to it.
We've also got the cabriofix carseat to go on to the vista base if we want to. Mum has just bought us the the carrycot stand, so it will get used as our downstairs moses basket and we have a swinging crib (£10 second hand) for night time in our bedroom.
We have gone for Taylor, the indigo colour, even though we're team yellow, and it's LUSH! So happy with it.
Edited to say that it does fill the boot of my civic, so may not be suitable for a yaris, but the back wheels do pop off really easily.First date 10.2.2002

Ditto what the others said re baby getting all the nutrients. But it's not just extra nutrients that baby can get back through feeding, it's blood volume (a 3rd of baby's blood is in the cord/placenta), and iron. The baby won't be able to eat/digest/process iron for 6 months, so the only supply a newborn has is from mum, which is topped up at birth.
Hormones will pass both ways that calm baby and also help the placenta to disengage, so you're far less likely to need intervention to remove the placenta.
They used to cut the cord immediately as part of the Medicalised birth process, it's less 'icky' for many mums & dads and delaying was thought to increase bleeding risk. Plus there is some evidence that delayed clamping can increase the risk of jaundice. So perhaps see what your hospital prefers and what your midwife thinks, and see what's best for you.
I'm opting for delayed clamping (until cord stops pulsing), and skin to skin (with me if possible, dad if not due to medical reasons). Of course if there is something wrong plans will be changed, but they are the most important 2 birth choices for me.Please forgive the badly spelt alias... I think mostly the advice is that delaying clamping is good for the baby because of the blood transfer from the placenta. I understood that it was becoming standard practice (where possible - ie. I had a lot of blood loss after my daughter and nearly dropped her in the birth pool so she had to be taken out and the cord cut fairly swiftly for her safety).
I just had it with my son. We had a lovely time cuddled up together doing skin to skin while we waited for the pulsing to stop. I don't know if it benefitted him directly but it was a beautiful calm moment just after he was delivered.:heartpuls Daughter born January 2012 :heartpuls Son born February 2014 :heartpuls

I cant find the info, only the one I have about pros and cons of the syntometrine injection. But from memory its what the ladies above have said. I think lots of hospital do this and skin to skin as a matter of course now unless something medically prevents it. I know at my hospital if you have a c-section the Dads undress (apart from underwear!) under their gowns so they can do skin to skin if the mum is a bit shaky.0

I think its just what suits you best. I dont think theres anything 'wrong' with the Vista but Im only 5'3'' and it was just way too tall for me. If I was a few inches taller it might have been perfect.
Our Oyster arrived yesterday and Im quite happy with the basket size though. I dont think Ill be putting much in it anyway, I mean if Im going food shopping or something Id be putting the car seat or baby in a trolley and loading it into a car, so Im only going to be using it for small stuff and the changing bag can hang on the handle or just fit underneath.0
