I think we are the most disorganised family preparing for a baby.

    No pram ordered yet.

    Cot but no materess.

    No furniture.

    A handful of clothes.

    No bedding.

    A few washable nappies.

Some freebies......starting to think I really should get organised.

1st stop order the pram at the weekend!

    Hi Sam

Which washable nappies did you go for? I want to use both but haven't stocked up on re-usable ones yet :D

I haven't bought ANY baby toys - has anyone else? When do they start to play with toys? I don't want my baby to look deprived lol :(
I'm on baby number three and I'm not sure that I've ever bought baby toys - it seems to be one of the things that people like to buy as presents so we have far too many of them.

    adding to the dogs/cats/smokers discussion....

Hubby's sister has dogs, but I'm not good with them so she shuts them in the kitchen til they've had chance to get used to me being there and calmed down, then se brings them in on a lead. I'm ok with them then. However, knowing that she will compromise makes me feel we could take baby round there and keep the dogs away.

We have a cat, who we hope will be ok... will try all the things suggested above if we need to.

Hubby's stepdad smokes, and he smokes in the house. He is now the only smoker left in our family (hubby gave up 4 years ago, his sister smokes e-cigarettes, but I will ask her to keep them away as well as there's no proof of what's in them, and my stepdad gave up on Christmas day.)

If he smoked outside, it would be fine, but the whole house STINKS of smoke. He is cutting down we think, as it seems to have been less smoky recently (I've been round about 6 times in my whole pregnancy.)

So... we have decided (I tentatively brought it up and hubby agreed) that baby will not be going to their house. We haven't brought it up yet though... I think it's hubby's place (his family) but he doesn't want to cause upset. So the plan is we just invite them over here instead.... the trouble with that is not being able to leave when we've had enough!

Birth plans... at our NHS antenatal classes they talked about them, but said it was entirely up to us if we wrote one or not. Basically, the midwives will look but won't have time to read pages and pages. If you choose not to write one then they will ask you the basics.

My birth plan is to go in with baby in my tummy, and come out with healthy baby in the car seat!!! Ideally not an epidural, but apart from that I'm easy!!!

Our hospital automatically does delayed cord clamping and skin to skin, so no need to write that.

I only got our pram delivered today!

We have a cot & mattress but if the baby is going in a Moses basket at first you could not buy one for ages.

We have some blankets & sleeping bags for the baskets.

I've bought fitted sheets for the cot but no point in putting them on yet.

I don't think it sounds that bad, you've got time! :)

Emz I left it to my DH to tell his family stuff like that too, luckily for me he's done it without me even saying anything. His brother asked to stay in a couple of months time & DH told him no 'cos you stink! Lol! He then told him about the cot death statistics and stuff and just said sorry we can't risk it, as even if something awful happened and it wasn't you that caused it we'd always wonder and just can't take that chance.

Not sure what he'll say to his grandad he'll word it differently but I haven't been to his house for about 3 years now cos I got annoyed with my hair stinking afterwards & having to change clothes so he knows there is no chance the baby will be going there!

When dhs brother had a baby I remember picking him up and instead of the cute baby smell he smelt of smoke and it was all I could do not to cry!

I haven't written a birth plan yet think I'm just going to write something short & succinct.

Same as my dhs grandad doesn't go anywhere without smoking. Well I won't be taking the baby to his house & if he doesn't come here in fresh clothing etc then that's his problem, he won't get to see her, I can't help it. Just because someone is elderly doesn't mean they can do what they like!

I totally agree with the smoking thing. DH's nan is pretty much a chain smoker and I can honestly say that baby girl will not be going over there whilst the house smells of fags (all the walls and ceilings are yellow and the furniture smells of old fag smoke) and she will not be coming anywhere near baby girl if she even smells of smoke let alone smokes. I don't even like it when she goes outside to smoke because it tends to follow her into the house.

It's awful when a baby stinks of smoke, when I worked in creches there was the cutest baby boy, he was always dressed immaculately in expensive looking clothing but he stunk of smoke :(

My mum smokes but not in the house, infact not during the day as she is a childminder. She has 2 in the morning and 2 at night when she is out her walk or in the garden. No smokers really in OH side either, his stepmum has the odd one but again, only outside. My gran smokes a lot and sometimes you go to their house and it is really smoky if they are all smoking but they haven't been smoking when I have visited and have had all the windows open so it's not so bad. Baby wouldn't be staying over there anyways and on the odd visit they wouldn't be smoking in the house.

    That's like DHs brother.

He's not allowed to smoke in our house or garden I make him go in the road or the smoke just drifts back in, but because him & his clothing and belongings stink of it they are clearly covered in the particles and our spare room would always need airing after one of his visits.

I can't wait til they bring in that no smoking in the car with kids law, so he might stop subjecting my niece & nephew to it!

Meeting the girls from my nct class again tomorrow, so far we've got one baby & another went into labour today. It's all quite surreal!
  • Hi ladies,

I'm popping in from the 12-24 week thread to say hello!

I had my 20 week scan today and everything was fine.

Please can I be added to the list the next time it is updated?
