  • Oh Skint- don't you just hate it when they're being 'helpful'... lol. I'd be interested in seeing your birth plan- don't mind if you pm it to me or whatever. Think it'd be useful seeing someone's birth plan who has done it before as I'm sure you'll have covered things I hadn't even thought were things! :)

Looks like I'm definitely going to be a queue jumper ladies! Induction will either be the weekend of 23rd August or weekend of 30th August. We're hoping for the latter as we'd like a September baby but if it needs to be earlier then we'll be happy to have our baby a little earlier. :) Had the nicest doctor ever (and I say that having seen approximately 1 million doctors over the past 2 years!). He had the softest hands I have felt in my life. I assume that all he touches is newborns... :) I've looked at my diary and I think I'm going to request Mat leave to start on 18th August and finish with my annual leave on 5th August. I hope they say yes as I've actually got quite excited by the idea of only 15 work days! :)

    Hope you're all ok. :)

sounds like some good plans tcod.
I wouldn't mind seeing your birthplan as well skintchick.
My hubby is also a great tidier-upper ie it all goes in carrier bags into what was the craft room, does my head in!

today we have made some lovely progress in our nursery, the carpet is down, and the wardrobe and cot have been built, just the chest to make up tomorrow. At least I've talked him out of trying to squeeze in the bookcase which had been in there as I think he's finally seen sense that there's not enough space.
  • I'm looking forward to next week when hopefully we'll get the house partly finished. It must be fab seeing it all come together. :)

Robots Glad your appointment went well and all sounds like things are progressing nicely.

Aqua Glad you appointment went well too and that they are respecting your decision.

skintchick Yay for full term :j:j your hubby sounds a lot like mine when he is trying to be "helpful". Chocolate sounds good though!

purcy Good luck for your scan on Thurs

TCOD Glad you got a nice dr and I am sooo jealous of only 15 more day of work (35 for me :()

Lemon Tree you will have to post pics of the nursery when done, if not on here then on fb, would love to see.

Hope everyone else is doing OK.

Well today was a much better day for me. We heard from the estate agents and apparently the move is all back on and our buyers are still buying...phew! Apparently they may go back to Poland bt if they do then they will let out the house...if only they told use this yesterday! We should be exchanging sometime next week as we are just waiting for the people at the top of the chain to finish their legal stuff. So fingers crossed the panic was all for nothing.

I had my first Lazy Daisy class tonight and totally loved it. I am so relaxed, even with yesterday's events

Teacake go for a September baby as the younger ones are disadvantaged at school. Much better to be the eldest in the year.

Ok, my birth plan is this:

    Midwife
    • Please do not examine me unless necessary
    • Please be as hands-off as possible
    • You may use the purple line to gauge how dilated I am. I do not want VEs.
    • Tell me when I am entering transition and second stage

    Positions
    • I want to be able to move around
    • I want to be able to use upright positions
    • I birth quickly, any may need to be encouraged to be less upright to slow things down a little
    • Please make suggestions about positions that may be helpful

    Pain relief
    • I may wish to use the bath and warm water
    • I wish to use Entonox only
    • I will use breathing techniques and hypnotherapy
    • Please do not offer Entonox but wait for me to ask for it
    • I would welcome offers of massage, especially sacral

    Episiotomy
    • I do not want an episiotomy, I would rather tear
    • I wish to use breathing, waiting and gravity to stretch the perineum
    • I am happy for you to gently support the perineum if you feel it will help

    If unexpected breech
    • I want to stay at home
    • Be hands-off
    • Allow baby to come out without help
    • Do not pull baby or use ventouse/forceps

    • If we transfer, assess before cutting
    • Avoid a C-section if at all possible

    At crowning
    • Please ask if I wish to feel the head
    • My babies do not stop once the head comes out so please be ready to get someone to catch

That's a very very specific plan, are we all expected to do one like that?

Really interesting to read you birth plan Skint, did they stick to your wishes? My biggest fear about giving birth is being out of control and people not listening to me so I want a very clear plan
  • Thanks skint- there's a few things there that I'll need to look into. Mainly the vitamin K thing- oral vs injection, tearing vs episiotomy, VEs vs purple line (no idea what that is! :) )

Monty- there's a birth plan guide on the nhs pregnancy website that I found useful as it prompts you to think about what you'd like and lists the options. I don't think it has to be war and peace but I think it prepares you for the birth you would like and the birth options that might come your way should things not go to plan. :) I suppose it depends on the sort of person you are though as to how detailed you want to be- if OH was the pregnant one then I know for a fact he wouldn't have a birth plan at all- the less he knows the better he deals with things whereas I'm completely the other way! :)

Just thread hopping - Monty, as a first time mum I had no idea how I'd cope with labour. I actually wrote mine when my contractions started (I was 6 days overdue!). I used the guide in my notes and said -

I would like I give birth on the midwife unit and keep as mobile as possible.
I would like to just use gas and air, however if induction drugs are used I may consider an epidural
I'd like delayed cord clamping and ask H if he'd like to cut the cord.
Skin to skin with me, in case I'm unable to then with H.
Baby to have vitamin K injection.
    Injection to deliver the placenta.

Most of it went out of the window when I was moved from the midwife unit and down to the labour ward where I had to to have the baby's heartbeat continually monitored and my waters broken, but for me I was pretty relaxed about it as I didn't have a set plan.

I'd also spoken to H beforehand and said if I ask for an epidural then not to take me seriously until I'd asked three times!

I wanted to be specific so it was very clear what kind of birth I wanted. The MW was very respectful of it last time and I got everything I wanted.

I felt it was important to cover everything, and as DD was breech till 37 weeks I also wanted to cover that.

I had researched extemsively andknew exactly what i wanted - it would take an emergency to make me deviate from this so I felt it was best to set that out clearly.

You may feel less strongly about things and so have a less detailed plan, but I felt this was what i wanted and needed, and I'm happy to use it again this time.

Teacake - not everyone gets the purple line but I did last time so I've added it in to let them know they can use that. I didn;t have any VEs last time anyway and they do have other things they can use, and they don;t really need to know, because it's obvious when you get to the second stage anyway.

I had one VE very early in labour and felt like I was being raped - they put their whole hand right inside you and it's horrible. I hated it and refused any others. This time I won;t have any.

This link talks about the purple line and other ways to assess dilation without VEs
