  • Got to say that I've had similar experiences with NU. When my partner changed to a different insurance company because the renewal from NU was not competitive, it took 2 months to get NU to issue proof of no claims. I had a no fault claim, which was dealt with by the third party's insurance company without any intervention from NU, as the third party's insurance company (Zurich) admitted full liability - they even sorted me out witha courtesy car on a like for like basis. NU zeroed my NCD. I only found out this had happened when renewal time came. It took some doing to get my NCD reinstated. I then moved away to another company, as again, NU were not competitive.

It's time to make that change.

It is normal for your NCD to be removed. After the claim is settled you instruct your legal representative to request your NCD to be reinstated at the same time they deal with your out of pocket expenses.

Zurich dealt with me directly, not with NU. There was no legal representative and I had no out of pocket expenses. The claim was open and shut. Zurich admitted liability and got me a courtesy car the next day. When I informed NU that it was a no fault claim and being dealt with by Zurich, they said it would not affect my no claims in any way, as I was only informing them of the incident rather than making a claim. See? The claim was not handled by NU at all. I merely informed them. They should not have touched my NCD. Zurich had a loss adjuster out within a week and the cheque was in my bank within 3 weeks of the initial incident. That's how open and shut it was.

On a positive note, I was asked to attend a forum to discuss the issue with the CEO, as I complained about the problems and NU admitted they were wrong to remove my NCD on a no-fault claim which was not dealt with by them.

Just got an email through and it appears that Norwich Union may not be with us much longer.

Aviva’s new chief executive Andrew Moss is understood to be considering axing the Norwich Union brand altogether in favour of simply using the Aviva branding in the UK.

That would be a shame as it would be another strong British name vanishing forever. Whether you like NU or not, you cannot fault the strength of the brand.

I am with NU and about to move house, will they cover both houses during the exchange period?

I will need to find out for you. I'll look into this today when I'm back in the office.

Shame or not - I remember A VIVA well enough - just like the Vauxhall of the same name ie unreliable, not something you want to be associated with and always a pleaseure to get out of.

    No change then !!

    Hi Becca

I signed up for the PAYD car insurance earlier today.

I notice it comes with free sat nav for 30 days , after the 30 days can it be paid for on a pay as you use it basis ( e.g. I request a trip's details in October and I only pay x amount for that download ) or are you tied in to set monthly payments to keep the sat nav side operational ?

I guess this will be answered when I get my policy documents through but due to the postal strikes this method might be a little quicker.

Wayne, don't want to tread on Becca's toes here but being a PAYD customer, I can answer your question. After the 30 days, you can either pay for the Sat Nav on a monthly basis by Direct Debit or you can do what I did, and that is to pay £25 on a Pay as you Go basis, and each route works out at around 80p. Alll you have to do is press your TM button and give your credit or debit card number. With regard to the Safe Speed system, you can only do this by Direct Debit. You can also "bundle" them together. All these details will be given to you when you have your "black box" fitted. Hope this helps.
