I was born in the October holidays so also missed out on the school birthday celebrations.

A colleague told me he'd calculated that if they had an August baby they would save in the region of £10k on child care costs which roughly equals 1 fresh cycle plus 2 frozen cycles of IVF. So I was gutted my treatment was postponed in December because of Christmas as it could affect whether we can try for a second child. I'm really not moaning, I'm happy we have this one, just explaining my thoughts from last year and why August babies are good.
    Pots: House £6966/£7100, Rainy day Complete, [STRIKE]Sunny day £0/£700[/STRIKE], IVF £2523/£2523, Car up-keep £135/£135, New car £5000/£5000, Holiday £1000/£1000, MFW #16 £2077/£3120
    MFiT3 #86: Reduce mortgage from £146,800 to £125,000
    Mortgage Sept 2014: £135,500, MF Oct 2035 Peak July 2011: £154,000, MF July 2036

lilmiss, I'm starting to panic about when I'm finishing as well. Planning to work to 39 weeks, and in the last 3 days have a friend who had hers 4 days early, only 2 days after finishing work, and heard of another whose a friend of a friend who had hers 4 weeks early and hadn't even finished work! I'm also panicking as I don't want an August baby who will be the youngest in the year.

phoned the hospital with my sugar readings from this week just gone. Response - 'oh they're normal' sounding very surprised... when will they admit I don't have diabetes and therefore they will be normal.

Yes it is a worry isn't it? I am worried about being big and uncomfortable. I want to spend some time floating in a pool, ambling round the house and thinking about Christmas shopping so I'm not going it with an under 3 month baby.

Re August babies, what Peonie said. My understanding from a friend with a September birthday girl said is that now children are allowed to start attending school the year they turn five if they wish. That means her daughter born 9/9/10 will be starting school in September at the same time as those born in August if they want to. The difference now is that April to August babies have a statutory obligation to have started by September 2015 but can attend from September 2014. Winter babies therefore start school when are pretty much five, while summer babies can start when they are only just 4. However I know I could have got this wrong as am basing it on what someone else said.

PS do now it's odd though to think that all being well, when I give birth, my child will be in the same school year as children not even conceived at the time of his birth...

Also were you really expecting the NHS to admit it's got fixed on a wrong idea?!

Chickpea - impressive. Not wanting to sound me but your catalogue of disaster made me giggle a bit :rotfl:

Glad to hear all was well MrsC.

AFM I woke at 4.30pm needing to pee a lot and couldn't get back to sleep. Worried it has the hallmarks of a UTI so going to present to my local walk in centre to get a dip test to be sure. Might pee now into the sample thing they give me for mw appts.

If I do finish on 14/9, that is 101 calender days. Works out as 43 working days for one bit of my job, 13 working days for another bit and 6 for the last bit!

T2D - agree with the others that you should have a break from work if possible. Must be a bit of a worry but I am sure all will be fine with some rest.

Talking about birthdays and school years. My DD will be a younger one in her year when she starts as her birthday is April but i know she will cope well with it. This one will be more of an older one in December.

Last day in work before our holiday on sunday woohoo.

How are you doing t2d? Did you decide what to do about work?

As for school years and birthdays, my hubby would not let us start trying until late December specifically to avoid a summer birthday! He has a daughter already who is a summer birthday and he is convinced that is why she has always struggled at school. As a teacher I do see the difference. I was taught when I was training that summer birthdays are one of the biggest underachieving groups (underachieving means not achieving your full potential...it doesn't mean achieving worse than other people. So you might be an August birthday doing well and getting mostly As and Bs but if you were a bit older you could be getting all A*s, for example).

I was not sure. I initially wanted to avoid a summer birthday but then when we got to the point of wanting to TTC I was frustrated at having to wait and tried to argue it with my husband! My argument was yes, summer babies are statistically at a disadvantage academically. However, if we had one, we would be aware of that statistical disadvantage and we would more than make up for it by giving them every advantage in other ways...there are loads of things that affect how a child does in education other than just where they are in the school year! So I came round to thinking it was not a big deal.

I can't remember who was worrying they might get an August baby now,..but I'd say don't worry. If you do, just be aware that they may (and it is only may, not guaranteed!) struggle a bit more in school, and make sure you are engaged with their education, give every support, lots of reading at home etc, even be prepared to engage tutors or whatever in years to come if necessary (and that could be necessary for any child, not just a summer birthday!). I'm sure we'd all do all that anyway so it should be fine! :D

T2D - did you get hold of the midwife? Would be good to get some guidance on whether to go to work or not. Baby and you are the most important people right now, so do what feels right. Hugs, its an extra worry on top of everything else that you've had to deal with. xxx

Re school, its all different here in Scotland. Our 'age' year (if that makes sense) runs from March - Feb, so the older children are those born in March and the youngest born in Feb the following year. i.e a child born on 1st March 2014 could be in the same year as a child born on 28th Feb 2015. School year starts in August so the youngest a child can be when starting school is 4 years 5 months. If your child is born in January or February you have the automatic right to hold them back a year, so they would start when they are 5 and a bit. I have a few friends who have done this.

I'm a mid August baby, so my birthday was right before school started back. Was great as it meant that I only needed to invite my friends to birthday parties, and not the whole class!

Well I just attempted a pregnancy yoga DVD...I gave up after about 10 mins. It was a disaster! I am so inflexible and have no core strength, it is ridiculous. It wasn't exactly taxing...it as meant for pregnant beginners! But I couldn't even sit in half the positions they wanted (I mean really simple positions...like on the floor with legs stretched out!) Bah. Ridiculous. So I did a very gentle 15 minute walk on the treadmill...and I do mean gentle...about 3 miles an hour speed! And now....I am spotting. Why even bother trying to be healthy?! May as well go back to bed with a giant cake.

    Hi All

Thanks lilmiss I'm managing to get on with things now however DH really did push it last night to the point I told him to stay in the lounge room as I would start saying things he wouldn't like if he stayed in the bedroom with me. Although to be fair I woud've been the same wether pregnant or not lol.

T2D how's everything going today? Did you manage to get in touch with your MW and get a clearer picture of what you should be doing.

Can't believe that some of you ladies have heard the heartbeat, I'm a little jealous lol. I really though I would've had the chance at my 18 week mw appointment but she didn't even examine me, just tested my urine and sent me on my way. Was quite surprised she didn't ask if I had any questions but I guess as I'm under a consultant the mw would figure I'd wait to ask the consultant instead. I do have the 25 week appointment booked where she did say that the heartbeat would be listened to so have told DH he needs to come along.

I've handed in my mat leave paperwork today thank goodness. I'm starting it on the 20 October but I have 4 weeks of leave to take and no chance of fitting any time in between now and then so taking the full 4 weeks prior which makes my finish date the 26 September, sorry if I confused anyone with it yesterday.

I have only heard the heartbeat so many times because of all the bleeding and worries so I suppose the other way to look at it is be thankful nothing yet has necessitated that! Though I will not deny it is really nice to hear it :)
