Mogwai - personally, I found IVF horrible, and even though we could have more attempts funded by the NHS, we don't think we're going to go ahead because I don't think I can cope with it again.

The drugs affected me mood-wise and emotionally really badly, and that combined with the stress left me struggling with depression and anxiety afterwards. It took me about six months to recover. I'm an extreme case - most people aren't affected anywhere near as badly by the drugs.

If you're self-funding there's added stress due to the high cost and low chance of success. Each IVF cycle costs around £6-8k, depending on your clinic, and has roughly a 1 in 3 chance of working. Common advice is to give IVF three attempts, if you're going to try it. The first cycle is a bit pot luck as everyone responds differently to the drugs, and the clinic find out about your responses and may tweak your treatment for the second go.

I know this post is HUGELY negative, and I absolutely don't want you to rule out IVF just from reading this! Just go into it with your eyes open, and do your research first. If self-funding, you can choose your clinic and some are better than others (with higher success rates).

Despite all of the above, I have friends who are unable to conceive naturally who have a daughter and another on the way thanks to IVF. In total, they had five cycles to conceive two children - three the first time and two the second time. But it can work. :) And just look at this group's graduates list.:)

Thanks pinkteapot - it wasn't a negative post it was your experience and I think I need to get a rounded view of IVF before we consider it. People talk about it as if it's the easy option if you are having trouble conceiving but from what I read it can be just as stressful.

We are on holiday next month so will look into enquiring at clinics when we get back - it's been 16 months plus a few NTNP before that so just need to bite the bullet and take action I think! Does anyone particularly recommend their clinic (in London or west Essex)?

Thanks so much for all the information so far it's helped a lot and given us some hope

mogwai - Fertility Friends has sub-forums for different areas in the country, so that's a good place to look for clinic recommendations:

Thanks everyone xxx Well, the deed is done, one 5 day blasto transferred successfully. The embryologist said when it was frozen last year it was graded AB and they were pleased with how it defrosted this morning so now it's just a case of time will tell!

    Friday hugs to everyone xxx

ETA: we used embryoglue this time round! Hopefully that'll make it extra sticky :)
