  • Ha picklekin, it really wasn't quite as romantic as it sounds! :rotfl: We both work in Bath and the other year I was given a gift voucher for a 2 hour swim. I didn't want to go on my own and I knew the only way of getting DH to go would be to buy him his own voucher (which I did for Christmas last year). So yup, short story - we went for a swim together after work :D A very nice swim though, lovely weather and a gorgeous water temperature.

Tea and Tam - lining dance must have worked, it's grown 2.5mm since last week! ET is on for next Friday (barring any broken bones of course... ;))

GlasweJen - that's exciting about the mitochondrial transplant! Fingers crossed it all goes well and then in the future you can tell everyone you were part of the pioneering women who took part right at the start of the revolution :) xx

I do like the idea of a kind of rapture (especially for tea and code) - we can close this thread then!

    Hugs to you all xxx

Ooh, quick Brownie question as well - if you wanted to volunteer, does it matter if you've never been a brownie or guide as a child?

Thanks frozen penguin, it is exciting but I'm also worried about the poor emby in the freezer waiting for someone to come and take it out and let it grow.

In terms of volunteering for guiding they'll take anyone who is fit to work with kids and is willing to do it. They even let men volunteer these days but do stipulate that only women can be the leader.

I've not been told anything about having to do a promise or a book - what do I have to do?! Why do I not get told anything from my brownie group?

I was a brownie but only for a very short amount of time because I cried when my sister left and refused to go any more. That didn't seem to matter for me volunteering.

I volunteered at beavers before, and although there were a few girls there it was mainly boys, and they are so much better behaved than the girls of the equivalent age. When I was young and didn't think I'd have issues conceiving, I had a definite preference for girls because I thought they were easier. Hahahahaha stupid me.

GlasweJen: I remember reading about that and even as a scientist I'm surprised by what we can do these days. Science is amazing!

They will be easing you in gently. Once you've been to a few meetings someone will ask if you want to do the leadership qualification - we do this at 6 weeks but some areas do it at 12. You don't need to do it and can just help out as a unit helper forever.

If you decide to do it they'll ask you for 2 people they can contact to get character references and they'll pay for you to get an enhanced DBS check done. Once they get your DBS and references back you'll get "the book". You work your way through it (it's about planning meetings, how did you tackle X, helping a child through their promise and things that you'd be doing anyway - nothing crazy) once you're done you're a leader! At some point along the way you'll make your promise, we haven't had a new leader in ages, all young leaders that have come up from guides but the last one we had just made hers with the new guides one night. Oh and there's a first aid course in there somewhere too.

Once you're a leader you can do other stuff like overnight permits, overseas permits (that one is scary - taking a group of other peoples children abroad is the scariest thing you will ever do), you can go for positions at county level (if you want to lose every second of your free time lol).

It looks great on a CV, apparently people use it for getting into teaching courses and the like. I just do it because I've done it for so long and I love my pack - we've been down at 4 girls and up at almost 40 girls so no two terms are ever the same.

ETA - some areas send a voucher for some bits of uniform with your book, it depends on county funds.

I'd also recommend popping along to county meetings as this is where you get all the goss. Apparently there's a unit in my area who have decided to just not pay subs this year :O

Ah that makes sense, thanks Jen. The division leader asked if I wanted to do the leadership qualification and I said I didn't yet. I've had my dbs done and provided references but I'm going to just be a helper for the moment.

Who'd have thought this thread could help me out with so much with brownie stuff as well as ttc?!

    Hi Everyone

I've not been in here as much as I had hoped but I hope everyone is doing fine. I was trying to get the house in order before transfer......didn't quite complete everything so OH has now been given the task to do it while I take it easy :)

Frozen I hope you are having a lovely weekend away, is it next week you are having your transfer?

Elephant I see that you are currently going through treatment, hope everything is going well?

Good luck to those in the dreaded two week wait, away to start treatment or those that need it :)

I had my transfer yesterday (IVF#4) so now have a good 8 cell and a crappy 4 cell with fragmentation on board, fingers crossed this is finally it!! It's snowing up here tonight and it's lying on the ground, typical Scottish Spring weather :snow_laug. It was 17 degrees last week!!
