I do wonder if people who think their wedding is all about them .....would be as content if parents then took no interest in grandchildren because it was "nothing to do with them" too.

I'm not inviting my parents to my wedding, it's not a secret that we are getting married, heck it went all over facebook lol, but I haven't told them, if they have hears, then they haven't said anything.

Me, him, my kids and his mum will be the main people there, and we are then going for a simple meal afterwards.

And my parents? Well I haven't spoken to them in ages, and they haven't spoken to me, they don't ask about their grandchildren, so in fairness, what happens with my and my kids is nothing to do with them

I've been to very few baptisms, I think two. ( maybe more as a child and not including my own!). I think they would be lovely gatherings. Sadly, they are not applicable to all families. :).

Advantage of big Catholic family is plenty of Baptisms. We have another coming up soon.

I think there's a huge difference between getting married in secret because you have fraught or difficult or non-existent relationships with close family, and getting married in secret when your family relationships are loving and close and and it's just 'what you want' for some reason.

But people view things differently. There are some close, loving families that are happy for the couple and don't have any expectations of them. Tiffany Achings MIL is a wonderful example of that, how lovely to walk in and tell a loving family your news and be hugged and an impromptu celebration to happen. No stress, little expense but lots of love and happiness. Not for everyone but for some it is a good thing.
