Oh COME ON!!!!

What do you really expect? They pay, like a pound an hour. The only reason people work in "grunt" jobs like checkout operators in Tesco is because the jobcentre threatened to cut their benefits!!!!

Thats wrong because tesco pay at least £5 an hour maybe more

Have I ever been shouted at by staff? No. I believe there is a reason for this. It can't just be luck I've been buying stuff for 30 years and haven't had this. I know for a fact through dealing with them that some of the public have massive self awareness problems. In other words their reaction to a situation is almost always the reason why they end up getting "treated badly".

So you are saying I was the trigger of the event? Just because you were treated nicely by them for the past 30 years doesn't mean this will never happen to you. Like I've said, this is also my first time being treated like this. And bear in mind, they are supposed to be the one taking initiative to show politeness to customers. In my case, I even took the initiative to greet her politely.

Sometimes I can recognise staff that are stressed for example today getting my car tax with a post office that only had one member of staff on duty and a very long queue. Treating them like a person even if they have made a slight mistake over something rather than getting worked up and ranting on about service like some do will make all the difference.
Stress? Everybody has stress...it's not an excuse to be rude. And like I've said, I treated her politely at first but rudeness was all I got in return.

They have about at 25% market share, the other around 8% or 5% and then the independents. So statistically you'll expect to see around 2.5/3 times more complaints about Tesco than any other supermarket just due to market share.
Fair enough, you might be right about this. Then again, if it is true, we expect to see 1 complaint from Sainsburys/Asda etc for every 3 complaints received for Tesco..This is not case, is it?

It is difficult to weed out someone who is going to be rude during the interview process. Yes, Tesco are ultimately responsible for their staff actions, but they aren't able to pick perfect humans for every role, because there aren't enough about who want to work on a checkout.

I can understand why you feel aggrieved, but it's just not worth getting wound up about, just go to a different checkout next time. You can't solve Tesco staff problems for them.
Yeah, I do understand its difficult to weed them out. An alternative method is to put them on probation first and get feedbacks from customers. I don't think this is going to cost a lot of money to be implemented.

I don't know whether they get more complaints prorata than anyone else, if they don't have as much emphasis on customer service, then they will lose customers, so it's not good business for them, so not likely to be a policy issue. They are still currently no1, so must be doing something right to stay there. I have shopped at Tesco often, and never come across rudeness. I am sure it happens occasionally, but doubt it is commonplace.
Well, they can have crappy customer service and still be at no1 - for eg strategic location of supermarkets, better deals from manufacturers, etc. There are many other factors to be taken into account.

I sympathise - my partner and I were treated abysmally by Tesco store staff and management.

Try sending an e-mail to the MD at terry.leahy@uk.tesco.com and also post details of it on http://tesco-complaint.blogspot.com/ The latter has already been suggested.

We complained but were fobbed off by Tesco. A week or so after doing the above (along with posting on MSE) I received a resolution of sorts.

My partner and I do not shop at the offending store at all. We rarely shop at any Tesco now, preferring to use Asda and Iceland. There are one or two items which are cheaper for us in Tesco but that's all. We used to spend 90% of our food bill there but no more!
Thanks, I will file my complaint accordingly. Hopefully will get a human response from them.

I would complain to Tesco's CEO and send a copy of your letter to your local store manager. Even if head office takes no action, it should give the manager something to think about.

If you read my first post of this thread, you know I was the one being treated rudely by the woman and I'm not looking down on Tesco staff!

laalaa and heather, there is no need for both of you to be offended about what grex80 had just said. He was generalising and he did mention that it doesn't apply to every single Tesco staff there. There are still many other good Tesco staff out there, I'm sure. But he has his points because obviously, this is a service industry so Tesco can't just employ such people without proper training and let their customers being treated poorly just for the sake of making money (ie opening the store without some quality control).

I know this is not the case for me as this store has been around for some time but then again, they really do need to emphasise more on their staff quality control.

Photogenic
Tesco staff comments to me later proved wrong -something wasn not included in an offer because "the offer was for ale and this is beer"!, then when I said it was in the offer and get someone to check the shelf edge she just kept saying "no, no, no". I mean that level of stupidity must be noticeable at interviews. Eventualy a superisor got it sorted but only because I said I would leave it and go somewhere else for my shopping and she had already rung up about £60 worth of stuff.
Security guards used to follow us about the shops too (not just Tesco but Asda and Morrisons too), because we read labels on things - aparently reading and criminality are intricately linked!

BTW Gex - you talking about the one near the m77 on the southside?

You go Cowboy, the excuses some posters on here make for rude staff are laughable, why should customers put up with such behaviour. The only way to stamp it out is by complaining,at the highest level.

£7 an hour - WOW!!!!!! Seriously, that's just not a decent living wage, and your employer should be ashamed for paying such a pittance.

And yes, I was talking about tesco "Silverburn" (formerly Tesco Pollok).
Funny thing happened the other day - was at the checkout, bought a couple of handsoaps, one happened to be leaking. The female serving me said:
"awww no man, ma hands are pure f*cking stinkin noo..."
she then stuck it in a bag and passed it to me!!!

I said, thanks, but I'd rather have a replacement if that one's "pure stinkin man". She looked at me like I had two heads!!!!
She'll probably rob me in a dark alley in later life!!!!
