or, alternatively, what clothes to wear when out and about sightseeing (ie of a very cover-up by Western standards style) and get told the relevant phrase for "*ff off at once you ****" if the cover-up clothing doesn't work:rotfl:

Errrm....what foreign trips I've had to date I have done the "cover-up" clothing tactic myself (head and all sometimes) and just had a few half-jokey comments about whether I was one of them (even though I obviously wasn't with my pale skin and hair). Havent had to learn an "*ff off" phrase so far:rotfl:

Come to think of it....I don't think I ever looked directly at any man either unless I was talking to them because I was buying something for instance and I had to. Hmmm....think that must be because I've had foreign boyfriends (here in Britain) before now and I'd learnt not to look at their friends too directly in case it got taken as a "come on".

Oh I can certainly see why some men think British women are fair game due to some of the things i've seen. However I did learn that accepting half a lager was tantamount to an agreement to marriage and gave the person the right to stalk me all week.

Lucky for me I look so different without makeup that when he was searching the beach all day for me he didn't recognise me...that and the towel over my head when he was around....lol. The nut-job also hunted me down one night and gave me a ring..........woah.....back up here chicken.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

Hmmm...amazing what "trains of thought" this thread can start off too. It's just struck me that maybe there's a second slight difference to the way women dress here. I'd clicked to "must add a few home-made craft type items to my wardrobe". I've just clicked to "Hang on a minute...what haven't I seen women wearing hereabouts?....duh". Runs off to throw out more "revealing" type clothing from my wardrobe...I don't think I'm ever going to be wearing that here somehow....bang go the low necklines then....

EDIT: LOL...Calico...just seen your post and now trying to picture you with and without make-up....Thinks...well if even Kate Moss doesn't look like Kate Moss without her make-up on...

    Morning all.

Well I didn't get much sleep and I'm still in pain but apart from that I'm feeling loads better. My mood's lifted and that's the main thing, I don't like the woe is me person I sometimes am. I'm much happier on the sunny side.

Got some lamb ribs out the freezer last night going to cook them on some mix veg for a one pot meal, that won't take me thinking about.

Can't really help much with holiday talk, not been on one for years but I can't say I've really missed one either. I'm a real home bird now. I was brought up an ex pat brat so got dragged around countries when I was young with my parents work, then did a lot of traveling of my own, so I don't feel like I've missed out and think I've been lucky where I have been. Now I just can't really be bothered and couldn't manage long travels anyway on flights, even though I've got opportunities to visit family living in other parts of world etc.

There are still places I'd like to visit sometime though but they all tend to be in this country. I love Wales but there are so many places in this country I've never visited, would also like to get to the Scottish highlands and the islands at some stage. With not growing up here there are so many places people talk about from childhood holidays that I feel I missed out on. The lakes are another place. I don't really like cities unless they are contained like York.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Sorry about this post but I've basically come on for a moan. Feeling sorry for myself because I've had a bad day and I'm in pain. It's days like this I miss someone else being here, just someone to say don't worry you rest, I'll feed the dogs etc or make me cup of tea. I know that sounds incredibly mardy and needy and I'm annoyed with myself for feeling that way. Most times I've very content with my own company but not today.

((((hugs)))) Mrs Bones - hope you have a better day today

I don't holiday now and haven't for years. My animals always came above that. Can't say I particularly missed them to be fair, but with all this hols talk I suppose it would be nice to be in a warm climate somewhere new for a chill-out and battery re-charge......except you often need a holiday to get over the travelling back once home.

Recent years if I went away it has been this country so little dude would be with me..(dog)....much to the annoyance of some boyfriends as they would moan the dog was more important than them....

URmmmmm........give me 2 seconds to think about that...........yep.....lol.

My plan is when I can either afford to work part time, retire, or get made redundant....that i'll get another little mutt. So probably won't be much holidaying then either.

I could quite like one of those huge American touring vehicles to drive around though with a few friends and whatever pets. Once I have dogs i'm too into them and want them along for the ride, last little mutt pretty much went everywhere with me. There was even a place setting for him when we all used to do the dinner party thing once a month....no wonder he was a spoilt git.

Right, off to stir paint...when I find something to stir paint with that is long enough , and will have to do a test patch and wait and see if it cracks as can't work out what the glossy/satin paint is i'm going over and matt may not take....so this is going to slow it down, had originally just planned to slap it on.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

Right.....test section done in Barbie room.

Have phoned bank and upped mortgage payments for now in an attempt to reduce this as much as possible, money is better there than in a pot or savings, and if it's gone it's gone and I can't spend it.

I have made a list of things that I need to do / have done / get.....in the new house. I shall post it here and you singlies can post any ideas for cheapness/things I should be able to do myself/ ideas if it were you what would prioritise / how much you would expect to pay someone.......and any other comments.

    Barbie Room.

    Paint....in progress.
New carpet....cheap carpet places?, how much to fit?
    New blind up.
    More sockets.
Fitted wardrobes across a whole wall (11 ft...ish)

(this is to be my dressing room as want bedroom free of junk and a sanctuary of calm...eventually).

    Bathroom.

    Check light fitting (wobbly).
    New bath panel.

    My bedroom.

    More sockets
    Current sockets repair.
    Blackout blinds.....cheapest/best place?.
    New furniture etc.
Old HUGE wardrobes taken down...which will result in a new carpet needed.

    Spare room.

Bedside units.....will probably get from a secondhand shop and sand and wax or paint up myself.
Get light fitting checked (looks a bit loose and wobbly).

    Landing.

Have smoke alarm properly checked out.

    Dining room.

Shelving and doors for under stairs space...been quoted 800 for this by a joiner...but will ask wardrobe people to quote at some time as bedroom.
Metal plugs need taking out of wall (have tried and can't get them out).
Walls made good (polyfiller and sanding)...I can do this...I think....no i'm sure.
    Decorating...me
    More sockets.
Electric meter cupboard needs pulled down and new built. (previous owner built over electric meter and I can't see it....??...why would you??).

    Porch.

Door bell not working...electrician does this?
    Alarm system not working.

    Conservatory.

Roof needs cleaning....window cleaner I guess will do this...when I catch him.

    Lounge.

    More sockets.

    Kitchen.

Cooker hood replacement....dont know what type of person does this as would need to be put into tiles again, so do I need a tiler as well as 'cooker-hood' person?
    More sockets.

    Outside.

Gravel out and grass in...may have someone to take gravel.
Herb garden section.....should be able to do this myself, may look up raised beds.
New shed at some point...cheapest/good place..?
    Garden equipment....good cheap place.
Outside security light.....need someone to take out old bulb so I can get new, then replace. not sure what kind of person does this job..(really high up on building).

    Think that's it for now.

Exhausted thinking about it, and that's nothing compared to moneystooshortomention and her project.

    All ideas /costings welcome.

Re your list I would say:

£800 sounds on the dear side for that joinery work. Does depend what doors you've chosen though and a joiner would probably do a higher standard job than a general handyman.

JOBS ON YOUR LIST THAT I THINK ARE DOWN TO AN ELECTRICIAN = doorbell, cookerhood, outside light.

Maybe a general handyman person would be able to do the doorbell. I don't know on that (assuming its electric-powered). But definitely the cookerhood I would say should most certainly be an electrician (electrics and its in a kitchen).

Definitely worth breaking down the tasks to be done to come under "Who is right person to do this?" type headings.

EDIT: carpet cost will depend on what quality you want. For a typical size bedroom (eg something like 10' x 12' type size or similar) then I would say £350-£400. But then I pick mid-price range and a decent underlay. You may decide to choose "bedroom quality" carpet. If you do go down the "bedroom quality" route, then it would cost a fair bit less, but not last nearly as long or feel nearly as good underfoot.

Alarm system might be an electrician job too.

Don't forget cookerhoods are apparently a cause of fires if not maintained properly (all that gunge going into them). I've been aware of a neighbour having a cookerhood fire. Maybe you might want to have an extractor fan set into kitchen wall instead? If you do, then its an electrician again.

Calico, just wanted to say, my darling pooch was PTS last April, she'd been through thick and thin with me and to outsiders she seemed very spoilt. My DD and I would only holiday in the UK, as she came with us, she hated kennels and I vowed never to put her in them again after one awful experience. She slept on my bed and a friend said, what if you meet someone, my reply was along the lines of, if he didn;t like it, then he could lump it.

I still miss her and always will.

CalicoCat I found RatedPeople quite good for getting quotes and people to do jobs around the house.

You write up the job you want done, and people who are able to help will contact you to provide a quote.

I haven't 'chosen ' any doors, the space is an odd size so doors would have to be made, had two quotes the same-ish price, so figure that's what it is.....will save up for that as not urgent.

Cooker hood I switched off at socket above kitchen units....it scared the hell out of me the racket it made. have just had back door open for now when cooking.

I think first job is to get an electrician in and get a quote for it all and a breakdown of costs, and do important stuff if expensive.......then rugby tackle him to the floor, and sit on him until he agrees to do a few 'handyman' jobs when he's here. My plumber recommended one, so will run with him for now.

Byatt.....Aww...i feel your thoughts. My last little dude was my Bessie for sure, any bloke didn't like it......bye bye, nice knowing you. Friends used to say when we were out that if a bloke started talking/chatting me up, that I was like some interviewer and asked several prying questions and scenarios of 'what would you do if my dog did this'...etc.....lol. I never noticed myself doing this. But if they couldn't hack that...then not right for me anyway. I have also finished with someone for not adhering to instructions (he had several things wrong with his health). You should have seen the care-plan he had if staying with anyone....lol....more in depth than any humans i've seen.

Have you or will you get another dog?
