Calico, I won't get a dog whilst working (another 4 years), I'm away for days at a time for the pet sitting, but do have my lovely boy cat now. Sometime in my fantasy future I have a dog, and a cat and chickens! :)

    Just a quick catch up.

Mrs Bones Hope you feel better today.

Got my washer coming this morning so need to get up and move stuff. Then at my voluntary job.

Bought a handy piece of kit on offer yesterday. It works by a laser beam and you can see where the cold spots are in the house it was quite surprising. Will be interesting to see what the difference is when back kitchen wall gets done next week.

was it from lidl? some one here got one and was checking the temp of anything and everything he could :rotfl:
Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j

Right.....test section done in Barbie room.

    Landing.

Have smoke alarm properly checked out.

Here the Fire Service will check smoke alarms and fit new one's for free if needed, probably worth ringing your local fire station to see if they do the same? (Added bonus, firemen in the house, and a fire engine parked outside will have the neighbors curtains twitching :rotfl:)

I think first job is to get an electrician in and get a quote for it all and a breakdown of costs, and do important stuff if expensive.......then rugby tackle him to the floor, and sit on him until he agrees to do a few 'handyman' jobs when he's here. My plumber recommended one, so will run with him for now.

    :rotfl::rotfl:

If it were me I would get the electrician in first - just in case he needs to re-wire ie lifting floorboards, re-sighting sockets which may mean plastering and decorating again. The electrician may also be able to recommend a joiner.

I recently got new carpets put down and went to a small independent carpet shop rather than furniture shops or department stores. I went for a mid-range priced carpet (£24.99 per sq mtr) underlay, grippers etc were all included in the price.

Because the carpet and underlay were obviously better quality than what I inherited when buying my house I had to get a joiner in to shave a bit off several of the doors - luckily a mate of my brothers, so very good mates rates :D

    hello all

    Just catching up with everyone.

Glad to hear you are feeling better Mrs Bones, I think that is one of the worse things about being single, no one to pick you up when you are down. I am quite happy on my own but if I had a man on standby for when I needed a hug and cheering up that would be nice, at all other times when I am feeling fine he could stay in the cupboard :rotfl:

For those thinking of holiday on their own, have you considered a cruise? I went on one once with an ex and loved it. I wouldn't be confident enough to go away on my own left to my own devises but if I could afford it I would do a cruise as a single person. If I remember rightly there was a 'club' that met each day for all the single people who wanted company.

Well done those on the DIY front as well I admire you all I would need to get my man out of the cupboard for those jobs! I really should think about decorating the thing that is putting me off is once you start thats it, there is no going back.

Now off for the school run, I will try not to leave it so long before I pop in next time. I had pages worth of reading to catch up with today.

Jesus.....no lifting of floor boards..!!....i will simply burst into tears like LB and get the job done some other way.

Byatt...that's why I don't have one at the moment too....one day.

Loving the whole firemen thing....do they come en-mass?.......LB you want to pop down for a coffee that day?......we need to organise a day....lol....in fact anyone else want to come?? when I see them at work they are usually not best pleased as it means someone has trashed the ward/smashed all fire points/sprayed the sensors with hairspray/or set a bed alight. A quick look at a couple of fire alarms and a cuppa sounds much better...time for a chat......(mentally working out what to wear..and it isn't the onesie).

One wall has first coat. I am having to do it slower than normal due to arm, still, no major rush. It's quite nice with it being a spare room not having the panic of finishing it asap.for a change.

With everyone wanting dogs cats and chicken we should form a commune....all pet sitting covered then. i'd love some ducks, but no room, and i'm quite keen on goats too..and not bad at milking.

This thread is in the top 10...!!!.....who da thought it.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
  • Errrm....I'd second that I'm afraid electrical work does tend to involve lifting of floorboards. Only reason it didn't in this house I suspect is because it was much more likely to involve belting away in my walls and running up and down into my attic (a lot of it down to I have concrete floors in this house). Boy....dust:eek: noise:eek:. Wear and tear on nerves factor:eek::eek::eek:. Part of what I was doing electrical-workwise in this house was putting right things like wiring to sockets not having been channelled into the walls.

Best to ask the electrician to explain to you what ways he proposes to do things and, if that sounds , then ask if there is a different way to do them (and be prepared for the fact there may well not be). I decided I simply didn't think it was worth even trying to decorate until after the electrical work and sorting out the central heating had been done, in case I ended up with "chasing" right down newly-decorated walls.

I also didn't think it worth even thinking of new carpets until after that work was done either. You wouldn't believe just how much dirt electrical work can create.

Hence part of it getting me down re the state of this house...as I've tried having a couple of Decent Cleans of the house and it simply isn't worth it imo until the "structural" work is complete, as you are likely to find a layer of dust over stuff showing up on top of things you only cleaned a few days ago.

I feel for you, I thought it was bad enough just getting my bathroom done. Although the guys did there best and were I thought very clean and tidy in their work; even with all the other doors kept shut a thin file of plaster dust managed to float its way throughout the whole house.

I waited about 4 months before ripping up the old carpets lived with floorboards for 2-3 weeks while I painted skirtings, ceilings and doors before replacing the carpets.....I like to pace myself ;)

I quite like the idea of keeping a man in the cupboard just for occasional use. I'm sure quite a few women would be happy with that arrangement. :D

I'm quite lucky in that among neighbours and family I've got a good selection of electricians, builders and gardeners. There use to be a farrier but he move to somewhere better for his work. I do miss him, both because I use to be able to get horse shoes for free and it was nice going out and the occasional horses head suddenly looking over the wall. Though I'll admit the shires made me jump sometimes you don't realise how big they are till you suddenly get this big head next to you.

  • Man for occasional use:rotfl:. Hmmm....cuddles when feeling down, DIY, dealing with workmen when it comes to bigger jobs, maybe a few "leisuretime extras" (except some of them seem to expect payment for that if they're in Gambia:rotfl:).

Gone past the age personally where I might be concerned with "leisuretime extras"...but the Man in Cupboard Scenario would have its uses for the other purposes mentioned. Oh yes....and A Suitable Man to take me out to nice restaurants when I fancy a meal out...(shucks...no smiley available of someone sitting there expectantly with their knife and fork in hand):rotfl:
