Love the list making - and all these items are on my list. I like a good list where you can cross things off as you do things, but this list looks like it may hang around for a while.

The will is relatively straight forward to sort, but some of the others will take more effort. I would really like to tackle the holiday alone one this year and i would like to go abroad (even if I can't really afford to!), but it is scary when your confidence is low.

Still, as they say, you eat an elephant one bite at a time so my first bite can be the will and then take it from there.

I must be missing something in my basic makeup. Even taking out the lack of confidence going on holiday alone has never appealed to me. I'm not megga sociable with people I don't know as a rule, I don't do small talk either generally, but can talk for England so would either be bored on my own on holiday or feel lonely.

I do admire those who do though, as they get to do/experience things I don't.

Right...i'm off to see a flipping doctor again (yawn), then i'm going to try and hunt down some curtain liners that so far are elusive since moving, and try to force myself to start painting a room...or at least get all the stuff ready for doing it tomorrow instead of resting on my aris half they day..this involves finding all the painting gear which I assume moved with me and is in the shed (some of my stuff went 'missing' in the move)...................no...i think I really should start the painting today. I will keep saying this in my head over the morning as it will do me good to do something physical.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

IF your home belongs to a Housing Association - some of the larger ones actually do occasional DIY days. The one that I worked for before retirement - which is now also my Landlord - does this.

It's only very basic stuff - but it's seen as a way of getting tenants to take responsibility for some of the 'less technical' minor repairs eg changing a washer on dripping taps / putting up shelves without making all the plaster fall down / how to use a drill/sander / how to bleed a radiator without flooding the place / basic paper-hanging and how to prepare surfaces for painting etc.

They also do 'One Day First Aid Courses' / 'Seed Sowing and Re-potting Plants' / 'Committee Skills Course' / 'Setting up and Maintaining Community Watch Schemes'. These are all useful ways of building up a network of committed tenants learning to work together for the benefit of the local communities - all good stuff, especially for 'singlies'.

That is a very useful thing for the Housing Association to do.

I would not be able to make use of their services though, as I own my house, together with my bank, so any maintenance falls on my shoulders anyway.

I've not yet been on holiday on my own (unless you count two days on a bread making course), but I would dearly love to go back to Canada. I've been before (when married), and know that if I want to go again then I have to go on my own as I don't know anyone else who would want to go. I don't want to do a tour as that is usually too much travelling. So, I'm looking at an independent fly-drive and covering a limited area, but I'm a bit concerned about the whole driving on the wrong side of the road in a strange (and automatic) car scenario. Not too keen on the going in for meals on my own thing either, but have my kindle if there is nothing to look at out the window!

It's just a bit scary actually booking anything though.

Good for you, I think doing these things takes balls. You never know about going on your own etc, you never know what's round the corner and you could well meet someone that would love to do it with you. I think it sounds great to be honest. A friend of mine and myself used to do this...but in this country. We didn't even book any hotels, just got in the car and drove around the lakes for two weeks, no plan as to where or when, and found hotels as we went. This was early season though so could do it that way. I loved it...no plan...utter freedom. i'd love to do it in scotland too, and Wales at some point...but if i'm honest would be with someone....if I can.

Re driving on wrong side of road.....it can be hairy at first, but not too bad. I would imagine the roads in Canada are better than Corfu where I did it, as the roads there aare tiny, narrow, and have certifiable Greek drivers on them, often with clapped out trucks that appear to be driving right at you. For me it was the hand break that I needed to get in my head, and round-a-bouts.........there was a lot of shreaking and swearing from me on round-a-bouts.

    Good fun though.

Edit....an automatic would be easier I reckon.

That above post look a bit odd...??...my sig at the bottom has become part of my post and makes it look like i'm randomly talking about dyslexia??

I plan on going to Toronto on my own next year, I have a friend in Minnesota that I'm going to visit, then a quick plane trip over to Toronto for a city break on my own, with hopefully a trip to Niagara Falls. Not planning on getting a car but will use buses and trains to get around.

Niagara Falls are amazing. Make sure you take the tourist boat and sail beneath the falls (although you will get wet despite the free blue plastic poncho!). The queues can be horrendous though. Toronto is also fun. You can get a ticket to go on bus tours to show you all the sites (the ticket covers more than one bus). I thoroughly enjoyed the one I took but didn't have time to do all of them. I hope you have a great time, both there and with your friend.

Strictly speaking I can't currently afford to go but I intend to move to a smaller house and am promising myself the trip as a reward (although the trip might happen first!). I keep telling myself that my niece went to New Zealand on her own so I should be able to manage Canada. I do struggle with the confidence thing and am not sure it gets any easier as you get older as you think of more things that can go wrong.

Oh, and Calico, there are very few roundabouts in Canada!

I'm happy with that definition :)

I hate spinster, single, singleton...singlie to me sounds fun and happy-go-lucky, feisty and courageous... who made up the word...? contact the OED...:T

According to the OED there is no definition of the word 'singlie'! Now's your chance to stake a claim :D
