  • Do you think your parents would be happy to say with pride to everyone that you as their son or daughter spent years studying and is working in fast food rather than a top banker? Or are my parents really that odd?

You are not a child. What the hell would it matter?

If you love your parents and they love you, who really gives a fvck what job you do? I really struggle to grasp your question - if you give a fair representation then yes, both you and your parents are pretty odd.

My parents would far rather I had some form of gainful employment than none at all. Blanks on your employment record look bad - something, anything is better than nothing. Its not like that is your permanant position for the rest of your life - treat it as a 'summer job' or something to tide you over. I've done alot of things my parents aren't or wouldn't be proud of if they knw (mum's a bit of a snob) but luckily I have the sort of relationship where I don't have to tell them everything I do. And personally at the end of the day its what helps me out for the rest of my life not whats embarassing to my parents for a couple of months thats of most importance.

What you have to understand is that my family were told that I would be educationally backward and I would probably have no quality of life when I was younger and if I ended up in some really low level job then it would make their greatest fears come true that I am useless.

    Oh My God

    Give it a rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You mean your greatest fear? I see massive projection here.

I just can't understand the mindset where being unemployed (and living on handouts) is less embarrassing than having a low-level job.

Working at McD's is rather like being a prostitute: you have nothing to be embarrassed about, it's the customers who should be ashamed.

No, my parents have always feared me being as the doctors said I would be and in a low paid and low skilled job is exactly what exactly the doctors thought I could do.

    I like that

And Phil I have to say you are backward - you aren't able to grasp that sometimes things ARE your fault, that you are not always right (even if you think you understand something you might not) and that to get on you have to be proactive not reactive - although you don't even seem to being reactive atm.

Go tell your parents right now that you're miserable and depressed and that their actions are making you worse. Tell them you need their help and that you want to go see a Dr. tomorrow to talk about sorting this out via medication and or counciling. Also tell them that you want a job, any job so that you have something to go on your CV, some money and so that you can feel good about yourself.

    DO IT- DO IT NOW.

But what's the alternative? A high-paid job is not going to magically appear, and you don't seem to be having much luck with your jobsearch.

It doesn't seem to be to be a case of
low-paid job now, or high-paid one next month

To me it seems more like,
low-paid job now, or low-paid one next month

What do you hope to gain by waiting?

I think we certainly have. I've been in on a lot of SP threads and have never heard about these parent issues.

    Not nearly enough then! :rotfl:

Keep on going....it goes full circle :T (in an ever decreasing sort of way).

Working at MacD wont make me feel good, it will make me feel dirty and smelly and just awful. So whilst I accept I need a job to try harder to get some more temp work as that might make me feel better.

I don't believe any doctor in the world could

    a) diagnose such a thing
    b) be so insensitive as to say such a thing to a parent

sorry you've lost me again, making up things like that does nothing for you phil
