Hi can I join in :hello:
Very unfit 42 year old ..well 43 in 2 weeks :(
Last time I ran was at least 25 years ago
Need to lose weight and get fit,
Today have downloaded run keeper app, sorted out some kit, told my kids I am going to get fit so there is no going back now lol
Know that tomorrow's run is going to hurt.
    Going to need your support..

    Good luck :D

Are you following a particular training plan? I found it easier this time round to follow one, rather than just running and hoping!

Good to hear everyone's still going at it, despite the awful weather we've been having! Nice and sunny here in the North West today though so hopefully it's a sign of things to come :)

Did my first 10k yesterday, really pleased with my time even though it felt pretty hard work. Got a 10k race next Sunday so at least I know I can actually run that far now! Think I'm almost starting to enjoy the running now I'm a bit fitter.

Struggling a bit with diet though, I never know when and what to eat before a run. Think I need to keep some sort of food diary to see if what I've eaten influences how good I feel when I'm running. I tend not to eat at all for about 3 hours before I run as I tend to get a stitch, but I'm wondering if perhaps eating something light, like a handful of nuts or something, might give me an energy boost... I tend to eat porridge 3hrs before a morning run and that seems to work quite well. Anyone have any suggestions?

If you can find a copy, there was a good article in Feb's Runnersworld about what to eat 60mins, 90 mins, 2hrs before a run etc...

  • Another 2.5 miles for me today, I altered the second half of my route today for variety and also to offer a slight extra challenge as some of it was slightly uphill.

I use myfitnesspal to log food I eat, I monitor calorie intake but am also keeping an eye on my complex carb & protein intake. That's a good idea to consider how different foods affect your run, I might look into that too!

  • Seem to be making gradual headway with my running, increasing average pace and distance and on target for my year's goal. The recent improvement in the weather has been very welcome.

I'm currently doing the 5:2 diet and have found that I seem to run better on fast days. There is some evidence that 'running on empty' burns more fat. Weight loss seems to be back on track too. :-)

    Well done!

    It does get easier :D

You'll find that you have good runs and not so good runs.

Two months ago I struggled like a beached whale to run one minutes walk one and repeat 10 times.

Last week I was running for 5 mins, walk for 3 and repeating 3 times. And I've taken almost 2 minutes off my mile time :j

My tips for you are to make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after, ensure that you have warmed up enough prior to the actual running bit, and stretch when you've finished. If you think you've stretched enough, stretch some more :)

Oh and make sure you've got good shoes too

    Good luck :D

Seconded. The most expensive shoes aren't always best either. My first pair were something like £65 and they've been the best pair I've had.
