Mk6 Golf and EGR valve issues

Well here goes: We have a VW Golf 2.0 TDI GT 2010 - Surprise surprise it went in to VW for the emissions software update 3 weeks ago, drove out of the garage and things didn't feel right. Well yesterday the glow plug flashed up and then management light and we went into limp mode!! RAC came out today and diagnosed the EGR valve - with the information given on this forum we will be contacting VW in the morning....we don't hold up much hope as we have not had it serviced by VW.....but watch this space.........0

This is becoming a common theme!
The coil light started flashing and engine would go into limp mode on my 61 plate 2.0TDi (owned from new) around 2 weeks after emissions update. I wasn't too worried at first as it cleared after engine restart but after the problem returned a week later the frequency has gradually increased to almost happening on every journey.
As of 2 days ago I now have the engine management light also coming on - this will not clear but does not seem to alter engine performance.
I also get mildly erratic tick over and response when feathering the throttle on/off.
Called my local VW dealer and have my vehicle booked in for diagnostics test Mon 12th Dec. I'm really not happy about the emissions scandal anyway but I'm now worried about the expected fight I'm going to have with VW. We'll see what they say after the diagnostics test.
I'd be interested to know how you guys get on (Summer Sunflower, VW Mark 6 and any others affected)?0 -
Thanks to everyone on this thread, it has been very helpful.
Just gone through the EGR problem with a six year old Golf 1.6 TDI. Same symptoms as others have reported -- flashing coil and limp mode.
My local dealer (Trust in Redditch), from which I bought the car and where it has been serviced, was reasonably helpful and helped to put some pressure on Volkswagen, who started out offering nothing. In the end we agreed a reduction in the price of the repair but I stll feel let down by Volkswagen.0 -
My Golf is affected by the 'emissions scandal' and I am still waiting for the update to be offered, so I was interested to hear about problems arising after the update has taken place. As this has been investigated by the House of Commons Transport Cttee in the past, it might be worth updating them on any issues arising after the software update.
Also, in giving evidence to the committee, VW said they would '..fix the cars with no inconvenience to customers' - is this what happened with Padgio and Summer Sunflower?0 -

Recently got a letter inviting the car in for the emissions scandal fix. No chance until there is lot's of feedback on the net.
Other than that never had an issue with out 60 plateas it lives on the open road.
Stealer serviced.

I've just purchased a Seat Leon 1.6 Copa 2012 from Evans Halshaw. Took it back after owning it for two days as the glow plug warning light came on and it went into limp mode. Got a call today saying it was the EGR Valve and they have replaced it. Luckily for me I won't have to pay a penny. However I'm not sure i want to go through with the deal anymore. Has anyone had further problems after getting the job done?0

The EGR saga rumbles on. In my case a 59 plate Mk6 Golf 2.0 TDi owned from new.
Usual intermittent glowplug warning light followed eventually by glowplug light plus engine management light but no limp mode - engine seemed to be performing normally. Took it into my local VW dealer who came back with the EGR failure diagnostic and a quote of £1100 odd. When I queried the cost he said that they request a contribution from VW as a matter of course and nothing in this case. So I spoke directly to VW C/S who raised a case and came back with an offer of 33% discount which I accepted and eventually paid £750. Perhaps I should have tried negotiating a bit more. Is it possible to still try and get more of a refund? The final jobsheet listed EGR cooler failure, but who knows... I'll look at recording it on the Watchdog website, of course.
As many people have mentioned, the big problem with the Mk6 Golf is where the valve & cooler are located, i.e behind the engine which I believe necessitates engine removal to get at it. If it had been on the top on the inlet manifold I could possibly have done it myself. That plus the unreliability of the unit makes at least two design failures... IMHO it's a clear potential safety issue if it is a known foreseeable problem/design fault that may cause immediate loss of power halfway across a junction or in the fast lane of a motorway as others have pointed out. If this shouldn't be the subject of a recall & free replacement I don't know what should.
It's such a pity as otherwise it's a great car, but I've no confidence that another big bill won't always be just around the corner. I was on the point of trading it in at the end of last year when the emissions scandal broke but the uncertainty of what was going to happen made me hang on to it, but I never anticipated that VW would take so long to come up with a solution and now the trade in value has dived.
Oh, and the other thing is that the dealer will do the emissions mods without asking permission, when you take it in for a service or whatever.
An ex loyal VW owner. (Honda for me next time I think). Moral: Don't buy a VW diesel!0 -
Also been watching this thread. To avoid the problem on my 1.6tdi, I had it remapped by Celtic tuning and also had the egr software delete done. The dpf is still functional and still regenerates to burn off rubbishy so no problem. Been running absolutely fine. I have sacrificed a little on mpg, but I have the torque and acceleration. Just under 150bhp. £300 well spent .0

This happened to me, Golf booked in for Service and MOT. No mention of emissions fix when dropping off car in the morning!
Not to bothered as no difference anyway. Car getting older now, never had any DPF issues but unlikely to buy another VW in light of all this... Bluemotion, more like bullsh1t motion..
Next car likely to be a Toyota hybrid or Nissan leaf etc...

How long have you had this done? I have seen that mapping out the EGR valve can cause issues with the DPF.
Tempted to get this done after my car has been in for the emissions fix (if it ever happens)0
