Having same problem with my Dec 2009 2.0 TDI GT Golf.
Flashing coil light on and limp mode, can usually clear it by re-starting engine (sometimes needs 3 attempts), Cat warning light also comes on at various times.

Would like to see the article from Daily Telegragh 26th March - can this be put on this site?

Don't know whether to go to Inchcape VW dealer (they want £144 to diagnose) or VW Customer Care first. Car serviced at Inchcape since new.

I had the EGR valve go on my Ford Fiesta (5th hand or whatever number driver I am, about 100k miles.

Took it to a local garage who took it out all together and re-mapped the engine, so it isn't expecting it to be there or try not to control it. I asked if it affected the MOT, they said no.

    PRO:
No chance of it going wrong in the future.
    Better performance.
    Engine seemed slightly happier.

    CON:
    ~£500 to do.

    More pro's than con's - I got it done.
  • Another 1.6 TDI Golf to add to this ever increasing list.... 40k miles, 62 plate, flashing coil, limp mode etc. Took it to VW today to have it looked at even though the issue is so blatantly obvious. £102 for the diagnostic. I'll keep you all updated with how much it ends up costing me.

    Great thread BTW
  • I have a golf mk6 2011 plate 74k miles also got an erg problem. Since the start of this month glow plug comes on intermittently, loss of power. I switch it off and on again and it's fine. But the gap between plug coming on is getting shorter and shorter.

I am going to take it to VW Solihull tomorrow and see what they say. Fingers crossed
  • I had my EGR replaced by a private garage 6 months ago and no my coil light has started flashing again and diagnostics showing up EGR valve again. Had result cleared and drove 100 miles without issue and the as I slowed down yesterday lights popped on again.

Surely 6 months is even short for this dodgy part. Could it just be sticking ?

Bit strange as each time it has come on this time I have been at a junction and previously came on when accelerating.

    Any advice please.
  • Hi, thank you for posting your story. I am having the same problem with VW with a very similar car. I am currently battling VW to get money for the EGR valve I need replacing. I would be very grateful if you could share any details of your complaint, reference numbers or the garage / date you had this sorted. It would allow me to push VW to investigate further and put a stop to them telling me not to take my advice from online forums.

Any details you are willing to share would be greatly appreciated but understand if you do not want to share. Thank you again for taking the time to publish your story.

2010 Golf Match, 1.6TDI Blue Motion Tech, DSG automatic. 46k miles, lots of short journeys with engine cold. Bought nearly new from VW dealer, and (expensively) serviced there ever since.

The amber "emissions control system" warning light (called "catalytic converter" light in manual; it's the one that looks like an engine, so very scary) came on, steadily - not blinking. Rang dealer, who said it should be diagnosed but could be driven sparingly for short trips in the meantime. Service nearly due so booked that as well, but had to wait a week until they had a loan car available. During that week the light went out, but day before bringing it in it came back on. During service dealer rang to say the problem was EGR, but also that they needed to get parts so I should take car back and they would discuss it in person when I did that.

I immediately googled "VW diesel EGR fault" and first thing I found was this forum - it has been EXTREMELY helpful in understanding the situation and arguing my case, since this is clearly a design problem (unacknowledged by VW) as it seems confined to the 1.6TDI of about 2010. (Have they now fixed the problem, and if so how?)

Dealer said the repair would cost £1320. I said that was totally unacceptable, told them about what I'd seen on this forum, and that especially on top of their diesel NOx scandal I was very disillusioned with VW. They said that as I was a "good customer" they would contact VW about a "good will" (i..e. no liability) contribution. The next day they rang to say I'd only have to pay half. I said that wasn't good enough, since some people on this forum got 100% of parts cost and 50% of labour - and that I thought even that (£3-400) was too much as this is a design fault. Dealer said I should discuss it with VW customer service, which I did.

Customer service person heard my story and put me on hold while he talked to the person I'd been dealing with at my local dealer. When he came back on he said they would offer VW paying 70% and dealer paying 30%, i.e. the repair would cost me NOTHING! I suspect this much more generous offer is because the NOx scandal (which was exposed quite a while after this EGR problem surfaced) they are very worried about losing customers. But of course they are only being nice to "good" VW customers, not people who bought their cars and/or get them serviced elsewhere. That of course is why they stick to the "good will" label rather than acknowledge the fault.

I am VERY grateful to everyone on this forum for giving me the ammunition to argue with VW, and therefore save a lot of money as well as anger and frustration.

    Default The same issue

  • Extra Special thanks to Random Guy!!!

..We recently had a bit of a nightmare with the Egr Valve on our 2012 VW Polo Blue Motion (diesel)..

I think the local vw dealership originally quoted something like £1200 to repair it (car was driving but engine management warning light kept coming on and dealership located the fault to be with the egr valve..).

However, upon reading this forum, set up by RandomGuy we were very well equipped to deal with VW (both the head office and the local dealership). We argued our case, that the egr valve was built so far into the engine of the car (ie: almost impossible to get to, hence the huge 'labour' costs to fix..) because it was intended to last the lifetime of the car. So, there was a clear fault with the valve, which is why VW were offering to replace it with a different version/model of the egr valve. For reference, we often drove the car in 4th/5th gear on long journeys..

They came back to us with a reduced price, ie: offering to pay for the valve themselves, but asking us to pay for the labour, in the region of £800. But, we did not budge, having no cashflow available anyway and also still pretty p####d with them for their emissions scandal..

Eventually they came down to £500. We still refused to budge.

Finally, in some kind of deal between the head office (customer services) and the local dealer, they fixed it: totally free of charge!!!

This was only made possible due to this forum!! Thank you sooooo much to everybody here!!!
  • Hi,
I faced the same problem, VW Golf 2011 (plate 60) 2.0 TDI Match with 34K miles, I took the car to VW dealer and they diagnostic showed the problem is related to EGR valve. the car was working perfectly till last month which VW called for the software upgrade related o the emission scandal, less than a month later I faced this problem.
thanks to this page I hope I would be able to make them to fix it free of charge. at the moment they invoiced £1386.
  • Hi I have a 60 registered touran with the infamous 1.6tdi. The car has a dsg gear box and 52000 miles. The car is used for small runs with occasional motorway blasts. I live on an island which is an issue with the tdi's.

Bought the car from the local Vw dealer. It was there ex hire car. A few weeks back the flashing coil and limp mode issues started and a friend read the code as EGR issue. He cleared it to do some research and while waiting the same fault appeared. Read this forum and took it to the local Vw garage, argument already rehearsed!

They read the fault and said I neeed a new egr. I told them all I knew about the issue and the service rep said she would fight my case with VW. 20 minutes later she rang and said VW would not give any goodwill ( I have FSH with that garage and have bought 4 cars from them) but that the warranty manager and franchise would help out. The work should have been £890 but I would only pay £248. I expect there is some help from Vw.

I accepted this as I haven't had to do any major complaining or spent hours on phone to VW. I might get it all for free if I fought it but need the car back ASAP.

I'm reasonaly happy with this. The garage have been good, although defensive of the band and it's getting fixed pretty cheaply.

It's such a big problem, there was another customer in there with me this morning with the same issue but was getting no help.

I will stay with VW but due to where we live and driving we do, get a petrol engine from now on.

I hope this helps people out. Brand loyalty helps as does service history. It doesn't detract from my frustration with them but have realised what I need to do.....avoid the diesel sales con .

    Good luck
