    Hi All,

VW refused to help on the payment of the repair and I managed to find a local independent garage quoting £620. Took it in yesterday and picked it up this afternoon and was issued with a bill of £857 which included a labour charge of £384, EGR valve £330 and various oils, treatments gaskets making up the total.

    .

That's a warning to everyone to get WRITTEN QUOTATIONS, NOT "estimates" (especially verbal ones - although a verbal contract is still a contract but far more difficult to prove later on), for this work and anything similar - especially from places you have not dealt with before - and then you can challenge them, in court if necessary, if they overcharge for anything, or do unauthorised work and charge for that..
  • Or perhaps placing the EGR valve in the awkward position was deliberate scam to get money off people.

Somehow I do actually doubt that because I think that VW (and most other automobile suppliers) are well aware that "reputation counts" - apart from, that is, the VW and other clowns who manipulated the s/w to "fix" the emission test results!.

Once something like this becomes public then the "reputation counts" concept takes a real big hit - as it has done with VW (and GM Vauxhall now with the latest Zafira recall just announced :().

    Suppliers please note1
  • Just had a valve replaced on four year old golf 1.6 blue motion 38000 miles. Offered free part by Bridgwater VW as good will gesture but charged £698 labour for six hours work to fit it. Customer services won't offer any more. Quoted me £600 labour on phone then charged me £582+ VAT on collection. Not a happy bunny looking at TV programmes and newspapers that will take up issues. So get your quote in writing and try negotiate deal. Will be posting on mums net shortly

Just had mine done today by VW in Hook. Car had been stalling a couple of times when pulling up and running a bit rough every now and then.
Diagnosed the EGR valve was clogged up. Replaced the lot (pipes etc) under warranty including 5 hours labour. Would have cost £700 otherwise.

Bought the car (1.6 TDI Match 60 plate with 36k) in January from VW Farnham. Both are Martins VW franchises. Luckilly the car came with a 2 year warranty.

I was also told the new valve may be a modified version although the service girl wasn't 100%.

There were no fault codes logged either.
  • 2010 Golf Match, 1.6TDI Blue Motion Tech, DSG automatic. 46k miles, lots of short journeys with engine cold. Bought nearly new from VW dealer, and (expensively) serviced there ever since.

The amber "emissions control system" warning light (called "catalytic converter" light in manual; it's the one that looks like an engine, so very scary) came on, steadily - not blinking. Rang dealer, who said it should be diagnosed but could be driven sparingly for short trips in the meantime. Service nearly due so booked that as well, but had to wait a week until they had a loan car available. During that week the light went out, but day before bringing it in it came back on. During service dealer rang to say the problem was EGR, but also that they needed to get parts so I should take car back and they would discuss it in person when I did that.

I immediately googled "VW diesel EGR fault" and first thing I found was this forum - it has been EXTREMELY helpful in understanding the situation and arguing my case, since this is clearly a design problem (unacknowledged by VW) as it seems confined to the 1.6TDI of about 2010. (Have they now fixed the problem, and if so how?)

Dealer said the repair would cost £1320. I said that was totally unacceptable, told them about what I'd seen on this forum, and that especially on top of their diesel NOx scandal I was very disillusioned with VW. They said that as I was a "good customer" they would contact VW about a "good will" (i..e. no liability) contribution. The next day they rang to say I'd only have to pay half. I said that wasn't good enough, since some people on this forum got 100% of parts cost and 50% of labour - and that I thought even that (£3-400) was too much as this is a design fault. Dealer said I should discuss it with VW customer service, which I did.

Customer service person heard my story and put me on hold while he talked to the person I'd been dealing with at my local dealer. When he came back on he said they would offer VW paying 70% and dealer paying 30%, i.e. the repair would cost me NOTHING! I suspect this much more generous offer is because the NOx scandal (which was exposed quite a while after this EGR problem surfaced) they are very worried about losing customers. But of course they are only being nice to "good" VW customers, not people who bought their cars and/or get them serviced elsewhere. That of course is why they stick to the "good will" label rather than acknowledge the fault.

I am VERY grateful to everyone on this forum for giving me the ammunition to argue with VW, and therefore save a lot of money as well as anger and frustration.

  • Following my previous post, 8 days later the repair was carried out as arranged, and (extraordinarily!) for free. Garage told me that the reason all these problems are with cars from around 2010 is that the EGR, or at least the EGR valve, was re-designed. They said someone else has come in with the same problem that morning and VW refused any goodwill payment at all. I feel that I have been very fortunate, and for those who haven't been let me express my sympathy and my anger at VW for not treating this problem properly.
  • I have the Mk 6 golf GTD 2010. 89,000 on the clock. I have been having this same EGR problem for a few months and have come here to ask for some advise!

My car does the same thing as many other, flashing glow plug light then limp mode. I can restart and the problems gone. Occasionally the EML will come on and the problem won't happen. But it usually goes off within a few days. Howver just this weekend the EML is on and the fault is still happening. It will literally happen instantly after restarting my engine so it's really effecting me now. Also I've noticed this problem happens more often in hot weather?

I had a service at VW in April this year and they picked up on the fault code. I questioned this at the time and they were reluctant to give me any information on it.

I'm just wondering where to start in regards of getting this fixed. My main doubts are that I brought this car privately, however it has mainly a VW service history. Also the fact of the emissions scandal. They said my car would be fixed in the first quarter of this year and I am yet to have any further information. I was reluctant to look into getting it sorted because I was waiting to have my car recalled initially.

I have my MOT coming up so I need this problem fixing. Any advise on where to start? Much appreciated!

After flicking through these posts would it be correct to assume the Golf mk6 1.6 diesel is the only engine that is either affected or has the EGR in such a position to cost so much to replace ?
Is the 2.0d EGR different or elsewhere ?
