It seems the reason the EGR fails on these is the solenoid / actuator thingy stops working rather than being clogged up with soot which was the main reason for the older ones failing.

Do you know what causes this?

    Is it corrosion?

Or just a part that isn't up to the job?

Could gunk build up put extra pressure on the solenoid causing early failure?
  • Update on my prob.

Got a couple more quotes for replacement. £600 from one and then today a local Indy got quoted £220 for parts and the £30 an hour labour.

Also been recommends a full remap removing the EGR valve and DPF at £400. A colleague swears by this and will increase BHP from 105 to 140. Obviously I won't be able to have the update when the emissions recall is done.

What are people's thoughts on the remap.

Is that remap including physical removal of the items? It sounds like just the mapping price on it's own.

Sounds good, but do watch out for the insurance issues - many companies will not cover modified cars, and others add a substantial extra premium which could depend on the % power uplift.

We are with Admiral, and they did when my 07 plate Octavia 2.0TDi was remapped from 140 to around 180bhp - OTOH, not affected by the EGR problems in this thread because it is too old! :D

The EGR and the design that put it at the back of the engine is clearly not fit for the purpose it was designed for. Interesting article in the Sunday times giving the whole history of dieselgate. The vw design was all part of the desire to get round the US emissions regulations and VW's reluctance to use the adblue system.

They are hoping that as this is not a safety issue they will just let it die down and bluff there way through hoping that they can wash their hands of it as the cars get older and fall out of the dealer service network.

I was told by VW if I keep the car and it happens again, provided that I have full service and repair history (@ £160/hour in Inchcape Chelmsford) they would give consideration to a further goodwill gesture. Clearly they are lying or hope that I will sell on the car by then to some poor sucker who will suddenly find their car undriveable unless they spend more than the car is worth getting it repaired.

I suggest all that people who post on this website visit
the Slater Gordon solicitors website google Slater Gordon VW scandal
and register for the class action against VW and ask that a claim for replacement of faulty EGR valves are included in the claim - If there are enough of us for a class action they will take up the case.
  • I decided go down the repair route as opposed to the removal of EGR and DPF and Remap.

Had it done at local garage and at the same time Service (Fuel, Oil, Air Filter and Oil Change) - cost including vat £598. Was pleasantly suprised bearing in mind a service would proba have been £150.
  • Hi to every one researching performance and stalling issues with their MK6 1.6 Blumotion Diesel. I had the same problem with my 2010 Golf 1.6 Bluemotion Diesel after about 4.5 years of trouble free motoring (Intermittent Erratic Revs, stalling when pulling away, Starting problems, poor performance) after 3 wasted visits to a VW main dealer and £270.00 out of pocket I was no nearer because the computer said NO! i.e. no fault code. The fault went away for a short while before coming back some 6 months later with a vengeance.

To cut a long story short the fault was cause by the EGR valve! which incidentally I suggested to the VW main dealer on my first visit (had experience of a similar problem with a Renault some years ago). As far as I can tell there are two parts to the VW EGR valve one which is controlled by the Computer and the other by engine Vacuum which moves what looks like a butterfly valve, In my case the butter fly valve which is not monitored was jammed/seized in one position causing major engine performance issues and no computer error.

I have examined the faulty part and it is possible to diagnose because the vacuum control linkage is external and you should be able to see it move (poss. by camera) or if you are able to get to it you could move it manual to see if it moves smoothly (this section has a little silver boot around it). I do not know if this is possible because I did not get to see the car in the workshop, unfortunately I do know it is difficult to access and involves several hours labour also the part is not cheep from VW i.e. over £400.00 inc seals and vat.

Please let me know if you find this useful.

    Kind Regards,

    MIB

PS. All 4 coil suspension springs snapped after again about 4.5 years ( do not tow or carry heavy loads), is this normal?
PPS The VW main dealer (not where it was eventually repaired) also tried to tell me the 3 out of the 4 injector were faulty at a cost of £1700 ish Gulp!!!
  • Still the cases are coming in, and Phil50 has failed valve number 2, yet VW remain shameful in their responding to this. I'd urge everyone to keep up the complaints to various consumer programmes (Watchdog/You and yours) and also the Transport Cttee (House of Commons) who are looking at the defeat software , that is also in my car.

I did ask for my broken EGR valve, and was surprised how spotlessly clean it was, or maybe VW cleaned it up for me.

Also, I recently got a message from my local VW dealership, saying the new plates were in, and did I want to drop by and buy another VW! Exactly why they think I would ever buy another VW is beyond my understanding. Should i call them back?
  • Just to let everyone know that Craig from volkswagen customer care ( guy in charge of all the egr faults) has confirmed to me that they have updated the egr valve, this shows that they know it's a faulty part but refuse to do anything about it, have also spoken to a couple of volkswagen specialist garages who have told me they repair loads of these mainly from 2009 - 2011 and reckons there was obviously a faulty batch. Still don't understand why volkswagen can't admit there in the wrong, collected my car today from them after refusing to pay £1200 to have it repaired by them still had to pay £85 for a diagnosis, such robbing barstads
