Mk6 Golf and EGR valve issues

Hi cbcov1984 and all,
I have had the same issues as your's and many others' posting here on this topic. The problem was diagnosed as the EGR valve failure by the authorized VW service. Mine was a 2011 Golf 6 1.6 TDI bought as new from the same dealer which performed the diagnosis. After the end of standard warranty of 2 year given by VW in Turkey, I started to bring the car to an indie mechanic for regular maintenance. The car worked fine for the last 5 years and a month (for about 66000 miles) before the flashing coil light appeared 2 weeks ago and the car went into the limp mode. When I contacted with the customer care in Turkey and stated all the arguments made in previous posts (that the part is not serviceable, many people having same issue, the technology used for the part was upgraded in MK7, there are many instances that VW accepted to cover %100 for parts and %50 for labour etc.), customer care refused to show any goodwill. Their primary reasoning was that the car was out of warranty for over more than 1 years and subsidiary was that the car has no service history in VW records after warranty period. I had no chance but to pay the whole amount (which is about 547 pounds) and replace the part since the car started to go into limp mode in each drive attempt. Now I would like to sue them and ask for reimbursement for the amount covering %100 of parts and %50 of labour. For this purpose, I need to collect evidence to support my case that this is a common issue for diesel VW cars produced between 2009-2012, that goodwill offers were made by VW for the same issue somewhere around the world and that goodwill offers shall also be valid for cars which are out of warranty regarding that the part is not serviceable (which means it is designed for the lifetime of the car). As far as I understood from your statement, your car was also out of warranty period, am I right? I would appreciate any help providing evidence/information about those EGR valve issues in the court. Thanks.
It's VW UK who have been making these contributions though and they have worked along the same lines of paying a contribution if the car stayed in the VW service network.0 -
In my case (have to go back a few posts to find it) there was no VW service history, as it was serviced by a local independent garage. But taking it to VW Customer Care did get a discount in the same area as those with a VW FSH.
So, don't let a nil VW SH put you off pursuing this.
Also, got my latest letter on the defeat software shambles this week. About a page and a half saying not very much, except a statement saying that it it would fixed at minimal inconvenience to owners.
This is relevant as in evidence to the H of C Transport Cttee, the VW MD said it would be at 'no inconvenience'.
Is this VW starting to backpedal on this and and moving to a position where they say, 'well, as the faulty valve does not affect NoX emissions or MPG, we will change it, but there will be a charge"
Maybe this is paranoia, but based on how VW have acted so far, nothing would surprise me..0 -
Hi
I have fallen victim to the egr problems on my 2011 mk6 1.6tdi golf. I took my car to the VW Hayselden in Doncaster and after a £78 diagnostics quoted £1107.64. After negotiation with service manager he knocked 10% off and it came to around £996.
Spoke to VW customer service who assigned a case manage who then spoke to Hayseldens who knocked a further 10% off making it around £890.
They would not budge from this and their main argument being its out of warantee and Hayseldens have never seen me before and probably would again due to where I live. How is that an argument?! Basically suggesting if we saw this guy again we would be able to con gim of more money in future but as we probably wont then not reducing our costs!
In the end I got really annoyed with vw customer services and asked to put in a formal complaint. They said I wouldnt need to do anything as a senior member would call me in next 48hours.
My cars been serviced without fail every 9 months, only ever does motorway miles and has 71k on clock.
Its as though they have realised the issue but saying enough is enough or its the vw garages who are independant which would explain they different costs nationwide?0 -
63,000 miles.
Passat recently developed same fault. Started with flashing glow plug warning light and reduced power, which after reset cleared the issue temporarily.
On diagnostic machine showing EGR valve errors.
Arnold Clark, Kilmarnock Road Glasgow quoted £950 for repair, which they reduced to £690 + the £77 for the diagnostic.
They said they had contacted VW who refused any good will. I was under the impression VW were now providing the part for free! I will try contacting them directly. Sent an email on Monday (25th April) no reply as of yet.0 -
I have owned diesel cars for years. I have now decided to run a petrol because diesel cars have become such a pain in the !!!! with emmision restrictions they don't like being throttled.0

Update:
Car fixed had to pay the £730, no goodwill from the factory, no free part, 15% discount from Arnold Clark, still charged me for the diagnostic labour. VW UK advisor unable to challenge the decision from the manufacturer or offer further reduction.
Pretty disappointing for a faulty part in a flawed engine design.
It will be my last VW.0 -
VW Golf TDI (2010) - 47K miles - EGR valve fault - quote £950
Fault
Yesterday the car went into limp mode with pre-glow lamp flashing and workshop lamp on.
Background
Car had been displaying ECU faults often during a long 6 hour motorway drive and was diagnosed as having a possible a EGR /DPF fault . The mechanic added a diesel fuel treatment additive and recommended returning it if fault returned.. Because of that I drastically reduced the mileage (which is probably why the EGR failed).
Actions
Took it to Sinclair's in Newport who charged £72 for the diagnostic and quoted a repair cost of £952 which I declined - no break down of labour or part and no fault code given.
Called VW customer service - and explained the car is fully serviced and the fault is not due to wear and tear - and a manager informed me he would contact Sinclair's and get back to me. Still waiting for an outcome.
Meanwhile contacted another VW specialist who have quoted me £930 and are prepared to contact VW and apply for a discount on my behalf . In addition, they have asked me to get the fault code and any TPI's off Sinclairs who did the diagnostic, - they have bluntly refused to reveal.
I have emailed a few local garages asking for quote but strangely don't seem interested in taking the job on.
Couple of lesson's already learned.
1) Never buy another VW, their engineering is over-rated, customer service poor , labour and parts ridiculously expensive , and have zero integrity.
2) Never buy diesels they are not the simple uncomplicated systems they used to be.
3) Avoid Sinclair's in Newport. Customer service is awful and staff are disinterested and rude.
I've already checked out EGR deletion but informed the DPF would also need to be removed as the EGR and DPF work together for regeneration of the latter. A removed DPF will fail MOT.
All my previous cars have been Honda's - this my first VW - and the comparison is night and day, the former is light years ahead in terms of engineering, customer service, reliability and cost of ownership. Not once in 15 years of driving Honda's did I ever receive a repair bill.
I just hope one day the consumer groups grasp hold of this problem and force VW to recall of these unreliable models.0 -
Hi, was that an Arnold Clark VW dealership. I was wondering as I bought mine from AC Citreon.0

Golf 1.6 TDI Bluemotion. Registered May 2011. 29,600 Miles. Purchased from private dealer in July 2014 with 16K on the clock. Previous VW history (fleet car before I bought). I have had it serviced once (at 25K) with my friend, who has serviced all my cars, has a proper stamp and works on Ferraris & Porsches all day.
Glow plug/Cat. Conv. light and limp mode started a few weeks ago, so my pal used his code reader and gave me the P0403 - EGR problem. Spoke to VW who said it must be diagnosed by a dealer, so took it to JCT600 Wakefield. They confirmed yesterday it is the EGR and were in discussion with VW for goodwill. Called me this morning to report there will be no goodwill whatsoever and cost is £1100.
Spoke to VW Customer Care who are opening a case for me today and will be in touch. They did say it was 'surprising' that no contribution had been offered! Can't believe a car with so little mileage can have such an expensive fault - I've wanted a Golf for many years, and when I finally get one the model I choose is flawed.
Will update post when I hear back from VW....
UPDATE - VW called and confirmed there will be no goodwill at all. They state it's up to the dealer to contribute, and because I didn't buy the car from VW they won't help. Picking it up today and have arranged a private garage to carry out repair for £535.
I hope that eventually everyone on here is refunded for what is clearly a recallable fault. Lost my faith in VW completely.
Oh, and still had to pay the £99 diagnostic fee for a fault I already knew about.0 -
Hi All,
VW refused to help on the payment of the repair and I managed to find a local independent garage quoting £620. Took it in yesterday and picked it up this afternoon and was issued with a bill of £857 which included a labour charge of £384, EGR valve £330 and various oils, treatments gaskets making up the total.
The whole experience has been an utter disaster - shafted by VW for creating a dud in the first place , shafted by VW on their expensive parts , diagnostics ,bad customer service and shafted by the independent garage who turned out to be a cowboy fraudster. No matter what anyone tells you this is not a difficult job, it's slightly awkward because of the location of the EGR but the engines are working perfectly fine( CIVS in Cardiff done my friends two years ago for £530 and charged 3.5h labour ).
The cowboy fraudster to avoid in Newport Gwent is masquerading as Pool Garage "a leading independent garage" - avoid at all costs.
It seems that VW are not themselves compensating the driver but are relying on the good will of the local dealer and for those of us who didn't buy the car or service it through a dealer are receiving no help at all.
The car will be sold next week and in it's place will be a Honda - a genuinely well engineered car.
VW - Good riddance to bad rubbish.0
