Yes, I realise some people like them but just answer me - if someone with a double barrel surname wants to marry someone else with a double barrel surname which name do they choose or do they end up with four surnames?
They'd choose to be known by whatever name they chose to be known by. What's the big deal?0 -
Apologies....to elaborate on the 'my choice' comment...my partner would happily get married, however I have no want to get married hence the 'my choice'. After years of discussion over the marriage debate we have reached the point in our lives where we are happy as we are & we have decided that the most important thing is sharing the same name as a family.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Its so strange that I have recently been thinking about this double barrel name thing.
I am the last in the UK with my maiden surname, but if you go to Belgium its more common than smith and Jones put together.
So kind of rare but not really.
But you put my surname with OH surname, it goes quite well together, but i wont be having any more children, so hmmmm.
Am still using my married name atm (divorced years ago but wanted to be known same as kids) and kids have that name, as was married then.
But my surname is 10 letters long, his is 5.
Oh and yes one day we will get married, soonish. So what to do?
Ah well time yet to sort that out.:D63 mortgage payments to go.

Double barrelled surnames are a pet hate of mine. They usually sound so silly and a bit pretentious. I always wonder too what happens when someone with a double barrelled surname wants to marry someone else with a double barrelled surname. What name do they take?
I have to agree :-)
Valentine-Saunders by choice so I guess I'm pretentious:rotfl:0 -
Whatever she wants, it's up to her I'd say! Although I certainly wouldn't want my OHs name if he wasn't prepared to marry me for it. Even so, I would keep my name if we did get married. I don't mind that my children's surname is different, my name is mine and I don't feel the need to identify with a different family than the one I grew up with. I always felt that a woman taking a man's name was a bit like "ownership" of a person and taking away an identity they had. I suppose double-barelled is different than giving up a name completely. It wouldn't work in my case "McCreanor-McCabe" does not have much of a ring to it!
I bet you'd have one happy wifey if you proposed to her for christmasMy OH doesn't want to get married either, mostly because we aren't religious, and also he's terrified of public events, particularly ones that would be centred around him! I understand them and agree with him, but still feel like I'll be missing out on something most other women get to do.... We all have our reasons for being married or not married, but I'd say make sure your partner is actually happy with your decision not to marry, what have you really got to lose?

Having had a double barrelled name I can tell you it will get preannouncedwrong even if it’s dead simple, changed completely and shortened to just one. Most doubled barrelled names do not fit on forms that is a pain as well.
This! I also have some of the most oddly addressed mail.
My surname is doubled barrelled and going back through the family tree has been for the past 300+ yrs
I love it, and it's a bit of a shame that as there are only girls in my family so unless someone decideds to keep it, it will fade away. I would like to think I'd keep it if I got married.

My surname is spelled wrongly most of the time. It's not double-barrelled, it only has 5 letters but people seem to be unable to put them in the right order.
And thinking about it, it's pronounced wrongly most of the time too. People say the first letter, hesitate and then totally mangle it - it's been said with 4 syllables before now (it's only got one!) I always know it's my name then!
Maybe I should change my to something simple.0 -

I hear your pain! My married surname is 4 letters long and no one can get it right. In fairness my husband is French Canadian so it isn't an English name but there are rhyming words used in English every day, so if folk can say cafe and pate I really have no idea why my name is such a struggle:A

I note Mr Redford hasn't been back - I hope his girlfriend's run off with the milkman or taken a rolling pin to him!0
