    Really! I don't think so

Do you think? If that occasion ever occurred, then surely most sensible people would just stick to a double barrelled name and not a quadruple barrelled name? Because like you say, that would be silly.

    Ok, signing off now,

    Mrs Barnaby-Jones-Battersby-Brown. :D

What I would do is keep our own surnames and give the kids the double-barrelled surname.

As for your partner's title I'd use Ms as she isn't married.

Our lives are more documented than they've ever been! I doubt they'll struggle too much.

What I'd like to know is why the OP wanted to get people's opinions here on double-barrelling (or not) when he clearly hasn't managed to make an agreement with his partner which she finds satisfactory...... odd priorities, I feel.

I didn't say that at all but it's hardly the end of the world if you're the last in that particular branch of Smith, the family name isn't going to die out if you choose to take your husbands name over yours when you marry, which there's no obligation to do.

Indeed. I was a Smith so quite happy to lose it.

To me a double barrelled names always sounds snotty.....but whatever your partner feels is best.

I don't think she should use 'Mrs' as that is just for married women. And she isn't married as you have told her that you're not going to marry her.

By the way is she allowed an opinion or does she always just do what you want??

That was another reason for me to keep my unique family name. I can find my ancestors very easily. Now I just have another name added on the end - which another 2 women in my family have done too so they obviously felt the same.
  • I have skimmed this thread, but I can't help wondering what the reaction would have been if it was a female asking the question, who didn't want to get married?
