Did they actually say this to you? I'm pretty sure they viewed your credit report. There isn't a bank that doesn't. What you'll find is that some banks will leave a 'credit search' fingerprint on your file that everyone can see, whilst others only leave 'enquiry' searches.

According to this, there shouldnt be any credit checks on either barclays basic or co op cashminder:

What does your credit file say about you? You can do a free check at noddle.co.uk.

Banks will probably use a different CRA but Noddle gives a pretty good ideas of how they all see you.

If MSE says you can get away without a credit check, MSE might be wrong. Although I think MSE says that you will have to pass a credit check.
  • On the co op cashminder account it says:

No credit check is needed (although an identity enquiry is made to a credit reference agency)

What ever that means ?? ^^^

Rubbish, there are 8 CIFAS categories, some of the categories are for ID fraud prevention and some are for warning of fraudulent applications.

    Just because you are paranoid...
    And your point is?

The fact is that many victims of ID fraud find it impossible to open a new bank account while the only purpose of CIFAS mark in this case is is supposed to be warn banks about extra caution and checks required.

They did the same to me. I have no CIFAS markers and have successfully opened accounts with a number of other banks.

    The Co-op's loss, I guess.

Could well be MSE is wrong. Coop Bank have been in dire straits for a while now, so it wouldn't be surprising if they did full credit checks for all applications. In fact, it would be surprising if they wouldn't. Sorry if this doesn't help you but you might want to try places like Yorkshire Building Society and their Cash Transactor account. That's essentially a savings account but it will allow you some DDs as well.

Was this just the co op cashminder account you applied for? (The one with no credit checks)

And what's a cifas marker and how do you know if you have one?

It means they do a 'soft' check - ie, the search they do isn't visible to other companies, and so will not damage your credit by applying.

CIFAS is a fraud database, check here: http://www.cifas.org.uk/nfd

You read the responses to your thread and you can learn about CIFAS markers and what they mean. You can also google CIFAS.

    Do you have one?
Check your credit file and you will know. https://www.noddle.co.uk will show you your credit file for free. You can see other credit files (Experian and such) for free as well if you play your cards right. Check MSE for tips.
