Turned down for Co Op Cashminder basic account!!

I applied for a co op basic account last week, went into the branch with all id requirements, they said they'd write to me once the account is open with account number and sort code etc, and to my surprise the application was declined!!

How is this possible? For the barclays basic account and co op cashminder account they involved no credit checks!!

I phoned them and the guy said i can write to them to appeal, but what would i say exactly and where would i get?

Similar happened to my husband a few months ago. He is trying to get a basic bank account to start a DMP and cannot find one that wil take him. Coop seemed to, but then he got the phone call saying they were sorry but could not set the account up after all.
  • maybe you should check your credit report to see if there is anything on your credit report to see what might have affected your credit, maybe then it would worth appealing

Do you have a Cifas, fraud marker on your credit reports or have you declared yourself bankrupt and not been discharged.

As you have mentioned CIFAS by having CIFAS on your name does it affect your credit report?

Yes potentially, depending on the type of marker applied - some lenders will not accept your application also your current providers may close your accounts.

I had lost my driving licence and i decided to put CIFAS on name now im thinking its wasn't a good idea

    Really bad.
On the sly banks transformed CIFAS from an ID fraud prevention tool into a primitive black list.

Rubbish, there are 8 CIFAS categories, some of the categories are for ID fraud prevention and some are for warning of fraudulent applications

1 False Identity Fraud -- Use of a false name with an address.

2 Victim of Impersonation -- Use, by another person, of this name and/or address.

3 Application Fraud (Facility Granted) -- Use of name reasonably believed to be genuine, but with one or more material falsehoods in personal details or other relevant information -; the facility was granted.

4 Application Fraud (Facility Refused) -- Use of a name reasonably believed to be genuine, but with one or more material falsehoods in personal details or other relevant information -; the facility was refused.

5 Conversion -- Conversion (disposal or sale) of goods (to which the hirer/buyer does not have title) under a hire purchase, conditional sale, contract hire, leasing or rental agreement.

6 First Party Fraud -- Opening an account or other facility for a fraudulent purpose, or the fraudulent misuse of an account or facility.

7 Aiding & Abetting -- Aiding, abetting or assisting, or conspiring with, another or others to fraudulently procure credit, or other facilities, or hire products or services.

8 Insurance Claims Fraud -- The making of a claim(s) under one or more insurance policy (ies) with one or more material falsehoods or by presenting a false or forged document.

    Just because you are paranoid...

Did they actually say this to you? I'm pretty sure they viewed your credit report. There isn't a bank that doesn't. What you'll find is that some banks will leave a 'credit search' fingerprint on your file that everyone can see, whilst others only leave 'enquiry' searches.
  • Do you have a Cifas, fraud marker on your credit reports or have you declared yourself bankrupt and not been discharged.

I was discharged from bankruptcy in June!

I have a late payment marker with barclays for an account £700 over an unauthorised overdraft, which ive been struggling to keep up with payment arrangments with them so theyve decided to close the account, so think theyve cleared the outstanding balance. I also have 2 defaults from 4 years ago.

Other than that above, thats it. On credit report it says discharged (which i am)

Do you think they know i had a debt with barclays?

And beleive me, nobody would have used my name for identity fraud, its quite unique. Must be to do with my credit rating but i didnt think they can do credit checks on the cashminder account??

Its doing my head in because i'm paying £12.50 for a cardone bank account plus £1.50 withdraw atm fees!!
