I think they inform the insurers of your car so that your premium goes up next renewal, or as they have the reistered address for the vehicle, ensure that it is vandalised therefore costing you more than paying the penalty, for the sake of the £60 whats the issue really?

What if I park the car in a garage

Where did you hear that insurers are notified over a bus lane PCN?

Heh heh , I didn't, it's just the ridicule of assuming the OP shouldn't wish to pay the fine, there has been plenty of notice that the bus lanes are in operation in the Bham city centre, no exceptions , do the crime do the time :)

Was this a PCN issued by a local authority? If so then it is a totally different ball game to a private parking invoice. If you fail to pay then bailiffs can be sent in and the costs will increase dramatically as a result of their use. If you feel you have grounds to challenge it I suggest you go to www.pepipoo.com and post on there for further advice. But don't ignore it under any circumstances.

Is birminghsm city council who have issued the fine

I probably will pay by just interested to see what they can do about civil disobedience

There was media reports that some were not sign posted, but I think that was resolved before xmas, although I mentioned about the insurance thing, possibly an unpaid fine could appear on a credit record which could hinder credit for insurance in the long term :o

The ones I drove down did not have illuminated signs so hoping to get off on that technicality

Park it in the garage and never use it. Bit drastic. Put the car in someone elses name could increase the insurance more than paying the fine.

I guess by the time the bailiff's get into it your into several hundred pounds. They can sit outside your house all day/evening waiting to see what time you come and go and if you use a car.

Can they get an attachment of earnings?

Yes, it gets referred to a debt collector, which dramatically increases the cost (in my case the £60 fine ended up being about £260ish, was a genuine council bus lane fine). After refusing my reasonable offer of repayment, they decided instead to arrest my wages - giving them less than half of what I'd offered to pay each month. The whole thing was really stressful, so if it is genuine and you made the mistake then I'd pay it sooner rather than later. I don't know whether they can seize the vehicle, although in my case the collections agency was a sheriff officer type setup, and they seem to be able to do pretty much whatever they want. Hope that helps. :)

Thanks. Couldnt they take the full amount with that attachment of wages process you mention?

Why don't you just pay the fine?

Well as I've previously said the fine is probably invalid since the sign was not illuminated. And as previously stated I probably will pay the fine if the appeal fails but out of interest id like to know what the law is with regard to baliffs
