OP, Mother or not, the first time it happened she should have been mortified and started at the very least to knock the door. You shouldn't feel guilty for asking people to check that visiting you, in your own home is convenient. As an adult she should already be using this this common curtesy.

I doubt she "caught them "in the act" so much as daughter came downstairs when she heard her come in....so may be blissfully unaware -Mind you most daughters would be so mortified they'd have kept the back door locked after the first time - not let it happen three times more so maybe they are just a family who don't "do" mortified

I felt odd this morning, boyfriend had gone off to work, i nipped into the loo and then when i came out, saw the front door closing!

(it was just him, having forgot his headphones).

Was glad I shut the toilet door!

(I got the impression the OP was inviting mum over (and invite was accepted), so they cancelled other plans and then at last minute mum said no and too late to do first stuff)

Also, what mums MAY do in a house that is just their daughters/sons, really needs to change when someone else moves in as its now 50% their place as well.
