You can always browse the contracts list and send a message from there? I don't remember the AOSP messaging app changing from 4.0 through to 4.3 to be honest.
You could also move to Hangouts, Google have pretty much binned off the old messaging app anyway.
Developer settings is still there, just needs enabling, tap on the build number in about 7 times.0 -

Installed Easy SMS (pansi) as I have always liked it, good customisation and a simple but really useful option to just list contacts with mobile numbers.
Thanks about developer options!!0 -
I ordered an 8Gb SIM-free version from Tesco.com for £129 on Saturday evening, delivery due tomorrow (Tuesday). The 16Gb version and all the Tesco-branded ones were out of stock. Today I see they are all out of stock, but Amazon has the 16Gb available for £159.99, 99p more than Tesco's price for the SIM-free 16Gb. My current phone, a Galaxy Ace, was from Tesco; it was branded and I paid for it to be unlocked, but even after rooting and refreshing it there were occasional glimpses that it had non-standard firmware; for instance it was impossible to change the stored voicemail number. So I'm not unhappy to pay the £30 extra for the SIM-free version. £129 still looks like a very good price for this spec, so long as I don't run out of space in my share of the 8Gb!0

I know its a pain waiting for the right one to come into stock on line - so try in-store too
Unlock code = £2

Agree with you that it cost me more to do it this way, but I wanted a phone with stock firmware this time. Local store was out of stock of all versions.0 -

I don't know ?0 -
Is there much tesco bloatware on the tescomobile version?0
-
Nothing Tesco related that I have seen ! - mine was was originally supplied with Tesco sim
a Motorola item called "Assist" which help you move data from old to new phone0 -
There is zero Tesco bloatware on the Tesco phone, although it does have Tesco specific software. You can change that very easily, without affecting the phones warranty though.0

I think the only Tesco 'feature' is the voicemail number that is preset may not be user changeable but I've even read some have entered their own non tesco voicemail number or just added their VM as a contact.
