It appears that you don't know that DELTA (as mentioned on the aldi website) is a visa debit card, as it used to be called visa delta, like maestro used to be called switch but you could still use a maestro card if it said switch. I understand why aldi don't take credit cards so I use my debit card, no big deal.

According to Yahoo answers "Visa Debit is a major debit card issued by Visa in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and other nations of the European Union. Prior to October 2004, the debit card was known as Visa Delta. Since June 2009, the major banks in the UK have begun issuing Visa Debit.".

Surely Aldi have updated their website since 2009 ?

Aldi have now implemented an 0844 number and an 0845 call number
this means if you are a virgin media customer it will cost you 10.22 pence per minute. yet if they incorporated rated a geographic number it would be free for the first hour.

What's in it for Aldi for implementing the use an 0844 and 0845 number for their new customer service department ?

Will Aldi be rewarded by a comission on calls to their 0844 and 0845 numbers?

Will a 1 minute call will cost their customers more than the cost to Aldi for accepting that a £1 purchase using a Credit card ?

So when it comes to cost are Aldi not really considering their customers ?

more and more businesses use 0844 and 0845 numbers as they get a commission (You can earn up to 3 pence per minute for incoming calls. This is called "end-user" revenue share by Ofcom.) so now you know when you call these numbers you end up listening to rubbish music for 20 minutes before getting a reply, but you can always use saynoto0870.com to get the landline number.

ADDED: It will cost Aldi to accept Credit Cards, so they have decided NOT to accept these in England, AGAIN OP it has nothing to do with you or anyone, they made this decision.
Aldi also decided to use 0844 and 0845 where yes they will make upto 3ppm commission, but customers will only be charge local rate, they could of decided to use 0870/0871 numbers where customers could be charged upto 15ppm to call

+ How much of Aldi's customers call their customer service number? Probably less than 0.1%.

I'd expect them to have you call barred by now anyway, so everyone could be a winner in this instance.

A very good point you have made

Unlike Tesco and Sainsburys I've never had to call Aldi as any issues were sorted out in store promptly. Not sure if their managers have more autonomy or are simply more proactive.
