Good morning, please can I ask if its usual for the company you are leaving to shut down access to your account?

I am due to move over to EDF and they say the electricity will move on the 18th and the Gas on the 24th. I have just tried to log onto my Scottish Power account to check the amount of credit on it and I am unable to get access, the message just says they will send a bill in a few weeks. I am still their customer until the change has taken place and am a little uncomfortable with not being able to access it. As I assumed I would be able to access my account I didn`t think to take any prints of my account credit etc.

Is it usual for this to happen? many thanks

Yes, it's usual with both SP and BG in my experience.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks macman, I didn`t think of this happening until the changeover day. Since posting have found a print I took of my account in late October and have checked the bank account and a payment went out on Friday. So I think I more or less have an idea how much I am in credit with SP. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I`m in the same position as you, changing from SP to EDF, 17th Nov for electric and 23rd Nov for gas and I`ve just logged into my SP account today to check my balance.
I`ve had no word from SP about anything to do with the switch but today had an email from EDF confirming when my DD will be taken.

I`m assuming I`ll have an email from EDF asking for meter readings anytime now or maybe they`ll send someone to read them.

Tomorrows the 17th so I`ll take the electric reading and on the 23rd the gas and wait to see what happens.

Hi, glad you were able to log into your SP account...I don`t agree with them shutting down my account! I have also received an email from EDF to say when they will take my electricity DD. Scottish Power did ring me last night about 5.30 asking why I was leaving...rather last minute I thought!! I`m sure I read somewhere EDF will email us to ask for meter reading just before the change. Like you I will be reading meters myself and taking a note of the readings.
  • You should be able to work it all out for yourself. Not as easy but it should be possible. You know how much you have paid, check your bank statements or online bank. You have your meters and can therefore work out how much you have used. You can find out what the unit rates are.

It's a bit of a nuisance but me not being the trusting type I like to check that everything is as it should be.

If you need any help with it I'm sure that someone on this forum could help you out with anything that you need.

I'm considering switching from SP to EDF myself so it's nice to know what to watch out for with SP, so thank you.

I have been looking throught lots of paperwork and notes I made when deciding to change companies and know what the credit on the account was then, I also know what has been paid. So think I have a very good idea within a few pence! what the credit is.
If I had realised that SP did this then I would have taken prints of everything and anything.
Glad this posting might be of assistance to others changing over from SP.

With SP they have a habit of splitting a dual fuel account into separate accounts with seperate account numbers and no calculation of how they have split the credit/debit balance when they issue the final bill just so they can confuse you so that you can't work out the if they have charged you correctly.

Thank you for warning me, thought everything was going too well!! I know how much I paid them on 10 October and the 20 July for both. I appreciate its been a little colder lately but if there is a massive jump in their final bills when added together I will request a full breakdown.

This is a useful tool to workout your consumption from bill to bill but it doesn`t take account of your discount.

If they have logged you out how do they let you see the final bill
    do they post it?

When I try and log in - this is the message that comes up

We are currently in the process of finalising your account; this usually takes about three weeks to complete. Once your bill has been finalised, you will receive this by mail.

You can then pay your final bill quickly and easily at www.scottishpower.co.uk/myfinalaccount. You'll also be able to instantly access copies of past bills. All you need is your account number and postcode that appears on the final bill we send to you.
