Can you ask someone in their own home..

to put the heating on?

Controversial question I know in this fuel poor age, we have to visit at their house (asking to meet in a coffee shop in town etc has always been rebuffed with ' no no, come to the house') and it is always freezing... remember the old days when you had to go to the end of the garden to the coal shed, that intake of breath before you opened the back door and ran down the length of the garden, freezing cold, well that is how cold it is.

Obviously to us and not to them because otherwise they would have the heating on, we go fully clothed for winter days as wrapped up as you would if you were going out and having to stand at the bus stop for an hour, there is no fire, just central heating.

Would be rude to ask wouldn't it?

I'd say so. I'd imagine they would rather meet at their home and not a coffee shop is because it's cheaper and they're not too well off. I'd say suck it up and wear a jumper :D

Why not invite them to your house instead?!

I wouldn't ask, and would be quite offended if someone asked me.

As you already know it'll be cold there, just layer up, wear a hat and gloves etc if needs be. Also you could take some of those hand warmers that you can get from the supermarket, and ask for lots of hot drinks :)

  • You can ask anything you like but if you have one single scintilla of tact or consideration, you wouldn't. If you asked me I'd tell you to naff off home if you didn't like it.

I think it would be acceptable to drop a few hints like 'oo its cold in here' or 'hope you don't mind if I leave my jacket on its abit chilly' but if they don't put it on after that I would leave it completely.

As 2nd poster said, its probably money reasons why they don't go for a coffee and havn't got the heating on and it would be awkard situation for them as they would feel they have to put it on now everytime you come round...or they would have to admit they can't afford it
People don't know what they want until you show them.

I have friends that don't feel the cold... I always wear several layers and strip off accordingly.

I also take a wrap and leave a fleece blanket in the car as well!

With them it isn't money that's an issue, they genuinely have just gotten used to the cold. In a way they are right. Thinking back to when I was a lass (LOL) it was a lot colder in our home than I have my heating set to now.

I think we are getting soft!

Id meet them elsewhere if they arent cash poor. No way would I want to be layering up in someone elses house and drinking hot drinks. I can turn the heating off in my own home, but if someone came to mine and it was cold, the heating would be on, even for an hour or two.
