If people drop in on me unexpectedly my house is baltic. I'm really economising to help my son through uni.
If i'm warned people are coming I will put the heating on for a little bit.

No, let's be sensible, you do your best to make your guests as comfortable as possible. No heating at all, in winter, is not likely to achieve that.

I also buy teabags and sugar, even though I never use these things myself, is it rude of my guests to expect that they can have a cup of tea even though I don't like it?

    :):)
Hmm, that's interesting, the tea and sugar. I have a good friend who never drinks tea or coffee. I always just assume I'll have herbal tea at her house. I've never wondered if anyone refuses it. I don't know if that many peoe pop into her house for a drink though.

Again, it all comes down to level of comfort. I never have the room in complete coldness. It is on for quite some time in the morning, so it is just by it gradually gets colder until the end of afternoon when it kicks in again. Yet my friend will never be comfortable unless it is full on (because that's how it is at her house), hence coming fully equipped.

I agree that it can be a real problem at work. I am in a small office with three desks, thankfully we all seem to have similar levels of comfort. I would really struggle to work in a small office with the full heating on all the time as the heat goes straight to my head and would make me feel sleepy and dizzy.

I only drink decaf coffee. I don't expect my friends to have some just for me, so either I go for another drink or bring it with me.
  • I find letting the heating go off is a good way of getting rid of unwanted guests :)

Was just thinking about tea, coffee etc! Can you imagine saying to your guests, 'don't forget when you come round to bring your own hot water bottle, blanket, tea, sugar, milk and maybe even loo paper!' Got to save money where you can! :rotfl:

Yeah, but that's a slightly more unusual preference. Tea and a temperature above freezing are pretty standard things people should be able to expect.

(I did once have to ask a guest if she could pick up some toilet roll on her way over though, poor planning there!)

That is it, that is what it is bone cold, I don't think I would ever take a blanket and a hot water bottle, I don't see us as martyring just mussing over whether it would be very rude to ask for the heating to be put on for a smidge?

Yes it would be If you don't like it-don't accept their invitations except in summer ;)

We can't afford to put our heating on when it's cold, and only put it on a bit when it's freezing. We wrap up warm, kids in onesies, I wear fleece PJs round the house.
But when my in-laws visit (in 50s) they moan about the cold, and on 2nd visit brought their own electric blanket, which they put on hours before they went to bed, and kept on all night!! I thought this was bloody cheeky, this was not Dec/Jan cold, this was like now, a bit chilly! I swear once was a September visit & they had it on!

I'd love the luxury of that! One time I hid it, but god did they go on for hours until I 'found' it.

Really...An electric blanket literally costs a few pence to use, even if left on all night! I can't believe you actually hid it so they couldn't use it and be comfortable. Blimey...

Electric blankets cost pennies to run....you could run a decent electric blanket for 2 hours a day on it's maximum setting every day for a year for about £4.50 and if it's left on all night on it's lowest setting (you couldn't cope with much more) it's literally a couple of pence......

We have them on all of our beds - including guest beds - on our own bed we have 2 single electric blankets (it's a superking size) and OH likes to get into a warm bed and I don't.....if your in-laws stayed a week it would probably cost you around 10 to 12p.....the luxury might be in buying one but certainly not running one.
