Unless these people are very close family or friends, I think it'd be rude to mention the temperature in the house.
Although they're probably members of MSE who post on the 'Is your heating on or off thread'. There's some people on there who wouldn't turn their heating on if hell was freezing over! :rotfl:
Hope they don't recognise the OP from their post!Early retired - 18th December 2014

But when my in-laws visit (in 50s) they moan about the cold, and on 2nd visit brought their own electric blanket, which they put on hours before they went to bed, and kept on all night!! I thought this was bloody cheeky, this was not Dec/Jan cold, this was like now, a bit chilly! I swear once was a September visit & they had it on!
I'd love the luxury of that! One time I hid it, but god did they go on for hours until I 'found' it.
Since when have electric blankets been a luxury?0 -
I'm always too hot and rarely have the heating on unless it's absolutely freezing out.
When people come to my house they are always moaning the house is cold.
I'll put the heating on - and shed a few layers - if it's one of the grandsons that's cold, but not otherwise.0 -
I think you need to put on layers. Tights, then thermals top and bottom, then thin jumper then thicker jumper and a cardi over the top or gillet.
I really don't think you can ask for the heating to go on. If they can withstand it you should be able to get by with layers.
We live in an old and drafty house. The heating is set at 17 because it cannot get above that figure even if you have the brand new boiler chugging. It has single pane huge sash windows. We have come accustomed to layering. Sometimes we sit under a blanket if it is extremely cold. We also have a log fire which we regularly light.
I think you will just need to go prepared to layer up.0 -
Id take a wee dram with me in a hip flask to warm my cockles0

If electric blankets cost pennies to run, Id get one for a relative who was staying, if people are so cold they are bringing electric blankets to someones house, well it sends a bit of a message out there.
Ive had my heating off for months now but if someone could see their breath in my living room, Id have it on, even just for the time someone was there, lets face it, who wants to go and see someone dressed like a yeti and being miserable?
And I live in Scotland, its not exactly warm, but everyone is different, some people dont feel the cold, others do.0 -
Yeah, but that's a slightly more unusual preference. Tea and a temperature above freezing are pretty standard things people should be able to expect.
What is unusual for some is not to others. Most of my family only drink decaf coffee so is what is usual for us. Also, I don't think we were forcibly talking about freezing temperatures, it is just that whereas some are comfortable in a room at 18 degrees with a jumper on, some consider it freezing and don't feel comfortable unless it is 24 degrees.0 -

People are talking about not having the heating on at all, what house gets to 18 degrees without any heating if its only 5 or 6 degrees outside?0
