Just ate 4 chicken Kiev's out of freezer, and used lots of close to composting spuds, with which i made some chunky wedges (inspired by the photos of florenceems homemade wedges!). Also cooked some quorn southern chicken-like nuggets and also Opened a tin of baked beans to accompany the rest.

Not sure what we having tomorrow. Will have another rummage in freezer tomorrow. Pantry and cupboards are full to bursting. In the new year, when everything is less chaotic, i intend to get a lot better organised in the kitchen.

Still haven't been shopping for anything. Cant stand the thought of all the hustle and bustle in the nearby shops and supermarkets. We have what we need so there isn't any need to shop for groceries. I am so thankful for that.

Edited to add: just remembered we have veggie burgers in the freezer. Will make some soft bread baps tomorrow and we will have veggieburgers for tea :)

In to freezer - Beef Bone - for dog - we left one out - don't like her to have too many bones at once.
Out of freezer - 1/2 French loaf.

We had chicken breast + sage & onion stuffing + Yorkshire Pudding + roast potatoes + roast parsnip + carrots + onions + gravy for dinner.

I'm hoping that reading this thread more often will inspire me to work through what's in the freezers and cupboards! I actually managed to defrost the freezer part of the kitchen fridge freezer last week by using what I could and cramming the rest into the small garage freezer, but it's full to bursting again now:o

One of my DDs has a part time job in a patisserie and came home with loads of scones and tea cakes on Christmas Eve, so they have filled the middle basket. Then the nut loaf and stuffing which I made for Christmas was sliced and most of it is in the freezer. I've also batch cooked lots of veg soup and veg curry for quick meals . I think I will need to put some bread in the remaining gaps today so....the aim is to see how little I can spend in January and how much space I can clear. A good proportion of our diet is fruit and veg so I will still have to shop for those. Any f & v that start to look a bit tired will go through the juicer which will sit on the work top rather than in the cupboard to avoid the 'can't be bothered to get it out excuse'. ;)

I want us to eat as 'clean' as possible, organic when possible and additive free.

Kirri, I will follow your lead and keep a good record of food spending this year (4 of us plus DDs bf on occasions) - should be enough to focus my mind on using up rather than buying. Just have to get everyone else to buy in to the idea now....think it might work to [STRIKE]bribe[/STRIKE] encourage teenage DDs not to waste things and suggest any excess from the monthly food budget can go in a pot for when they have a big spend coming up, college trips etc. Wish me luck

Kirri I had nothing in my mag? Are you fully going vegan now? What is it veg and pulses only? Will have to look it up, you could make tomato mayo that is totally vegan.

Still veggie but if I find good alternatives (ie that tastes nice and is organic or no additives) then I've changed but still eating some dairy still although ethically I'd rather not. However added to my personal choices, got something wrong with my insides.. seems to be affected by acid so along with meds I've suddenly had to cut out most things from my diet temporarily - think ultra healthy virtually vegan for me with no flavour :rotfl: (but if I ate meat I think I could have had plain chicken/fish etc) it's a bit extreme even for me.. ie no processed food, spices, salt, pickle, sugar, fat etc also includes any fruit and veg with acid in so no citrus, tomatoes, onions.. and I'm not supposed to have dairy either and the only thing I can drink is water.

So am still on the challenge but I can't physically finish off a lot of condiments I wanted to use up.

Ditto for me too, health issues aside, my personal choice too.

It definitely focuses the spends when it's all typed up! Especially for you with a family of 4/5, the final figure could be a shock! I put it all into Excel. I could possibly cut mine down a bit by repeating the same meals more than I do albeit if I had more £ I would probably spend a bit more for variety as budget very limited at mo. I think I get as many offers as I can for the types of food I eat so no more savings there.

Must admit I don't get the constant spending when there is a freezer full already as to me it's just more money going out of the purse!

    Out

Half a leg of lamb (Ocado offer) to make sure defrosted for New Year's Day. Will have roast and then OH gets enough for sandwiches Thursday and Friday. He's still valiantly munching through clementines and gluten free mince pies.

Currently sorting out books because if you get a Tag a Bag account from Oxfam (sign up in store) and link a Nectar card, you get 100 Nectar points for joining and 2 points per £1 that Oxfam makes in sales from the donated goods (the Nectar points are added weekly).

Out: fish pie, yogurt and milk. In: 6 helpings of celery soup. I need to actually have the soup for my work lunches next week, let's see if I can remember to get it out! I haven't had any Christmas bargains as there is no room to house them. Perhaps I will have a very cheap January grocery bill as I soldier through freezer 1 with the aim of it being empty and defrosted by the end of January then I can transfer the contents of my second freezer into it and perhaps by Easter I will be ready for some bargains.
  • This thread has inspired me to sort through my freezers(3 of:eek:)
So tonight I have done an inventry of all three and I have meal planned for this week.
Yesterday I went to Tesco because I had a lot of coupons I wanted to use up so I got a £45 spend down to £33 on staples for the cupboard pasta, rice, noodles etc.
We have a cupboard full of coffee so apart from milk and fruit and veg I am going to try and have a spend free January.
We are saving for a new kitchen so all that I save will be going into that fund.

In to freezer - bags of sage/onion stuffing + pigs in blankets + chicken breast.
Out - bread + last of the burgers that Mr F fetched home.
We had HM Shepherd's Pie + mushy peas + baked beans for dinner.

  • Kirri no spice or flavoring? I would not be pleased, but if it's for health it's got to be done! At least your cholesterol won't be a problem because you can't eat anything.

I took a few prawn bites and Bellini out the freezer for lunch, finally the Christmas meat is finished.

I got reduced peppers, 2bags of clementines, reduced scones which have Now been frozen, strawberrys, peppers will need to be chopped and frozen.

Dinner was the last of the pork and ham, the remainder of wedges and beetroot, the last of the coleslaw, green beans and kale.

I just got my best ys haul EVER
Hot cooked chicken thighs x 2 10p each
Hot cooked 8pk of chicken wings x 5 10p each
    Smoked salmon 20p
    Stir fry beef x 3 40p
    A packet of 4 chicken breasts 40p

Now I thought that was brilliant until I pressed total. The beef was on a 3 for £10 deal and it still knocked £2 off.

50p for two bag fulls of meat:j:D:rotfl:

I'll update my signature with my very small spend :D
